After her brief exchange with Edward, Milleia left the crowded hall.
She did not return to Jennyfer. She could not bear the thought of having to explain what had happened while people watched her wipe tears from her face. Instead, she made her way toward one of the balconies, keeping her eyes lowered.
The doors opened onto cooler air.
Milleia stepped outside and walked toward the railing.
Beyond it, Ophirion stretched beneath the dark sky. Lights shone from buildings and along the streets, giving her somewhere to look that was not another person's face. Behind her, the celebration continued, its music and voices softened by the distance.
She tried to breathe slowly.
It did little to help.
Tears slipped down her cheeks again, and she wiped them away with the same hurried motion she had used inside. More followed before she could lower her hand.
She had found him alive.
That should have been enough to make her happy tonight.
