Everyone immediately backed away from Ren's group, trembling, wide-eyed, and too shaken to breathe properly. Even Ren needed a second to process what happened. He could hardly believe that Sebastian had stepped in to protect them. Or rather… protect Evie.
Ren wasn't foolish enough to assume the centaur suddenly cared for him, but regardless of the reason, it worked in their favor.
Sebastian didn't seem bothered by the horrified stares around him. Instead, he spoke in a grave, commanding tone. "Tendrils have now descended from Jibblinplip toward the heart of the world."
As he said this, the centaur's obsidian eyes shifted—colors spiraled inside them like distant galaxies. It was as if he was seeing something far beyond the physical plane, something only he could understand.
