Thomas moved along with his kin as they shuffled through the streets. There was no signs of Flesh bags anywhere, but that didn't deter any of the horde. It would've been a strange sight to any city dwellers with how dead the streets had become.
Even still, Thomas felt something was strange. A far off memory seemed to surface in his mind.
"…a city of 12 million and more…"
"Raagghh!" Thomas knew in his bones that there was more food somewhere, it was just hiding.
He racked what brain cells he still had and tried to form some advanced thoughts.
'Flesh bags' -> 'bright light'
'light' = 'Flesh bags'?
Thomas looked around and could see lights above them but there was not any prey around. There must be something else he was overlooking.
When Oscar confronted Thomas, he was mentioning something about his territory. That must have been it!
Thomas looked around and did whatever was the equivalent of frowning for an undead. The Flesh bags were most likely hiding in the tall structures around them, "buildings". The small "buildings" meanwhile, would not let his kin inside.
That's when a miracle occurred, Thomas had a complex thought hit him.
'Thomas'-> 'Food'
'Food' -> 'Thomas'
Instead of going towards the food, he should let them come to him. But what would make Flesh bags come to him?
'Water'
'Food'
Those ideas quickly fell through as Thomas couldn't think of a way to get those. He had to concentrate even harder in order to feed himself.
Thomas looked over his kin for quite awhile before finally coming to a conclusion. The humans, like his kin, would have to seek food out. Which meant that Thomas should go to where the food they wanted was at.
From his fight with Oscar, Thomas recognized that fighting them head on may not be a good idea. He had to kill fast in order to stop them from fighting back.
He started to walk and eventually found his destination. A gated up building called "117", the words and numbers made no sense to him now but he felt as if he had been there many times.
Many kin walked the streets surrounding it, but close by was a dark alley where few were. The Flesh bags were food for Thomas and his kind, and they did not want to be eaten. So it can be reasoned that they would try to avoid them in order to get their food.
Thomas got to work as he walked through the alley. He had to get higher, which meant getting to the top of the buildings. He stared at a tool he faintly recognized.
"Ladder"
His limbs were not able to easily use it like the Flesh bags. His hands could only grasp things similar to a "Crab", whatever that word meant.
He used all his strength to start moving a metal box that was similar to the one Oscar fought him over.
The "Dumpster" stopped below the ladder and Thomas climbed on top of it. Using the dumpster, he jumped and was able to reach the metal platform that the ladder led to. After that, it took a bit more work but he was able to walk up the metal stairs until he got to the roof.
Other kin grew curious from the noise he was making in the alley, so they took a peak in. But as soon as they saw that Thomas wasn't a Flesh bag, they lost interest. Except for one undead, that is.
When Thomas finally got to the rooftop, he was faced with yet another problem. It was extremely hard to see anything! His eyes were no better at night than any of the Flesh bags. The only thing he could do now was wait for daybreak.
At the first crack of light, Thomas went to work and started to gather any heavy looking objects he could find on the roof.
CLANG CLANG CLANG
In the middle of moving a broken "Air conditioning unit", Thomas could hear something attempting to go up the metal stairs he came up on.
When he checked, it turned out that there was an undead trying to jump up to the platform. It had even less mobility and motor control than Thomas it seemed. But for some reason it was fixated on getting up there.
Left with seemingly no choice, Thomas stumbled back down the walkway and waited until he could grasp on to the undead's arms. When he caught it, he used all his strength to pull it up.
"Ruaagh!" The undead said to Thomas.
"…Raugh?"
"…wauugh?"
"…"
"…"
The undead seemed to show appreciation towards Thomas, at least that's what he thought from the scant memories he had of the past. Communication did not seem to be working, in the case of verbal sounds anyway.
Thomas turned around and watched as the infected looked from between him and the step.
Clang
The undead's foot missed the step entirely and went between the metal steps.
"Ruaghh!!"
Thomas growled in frustration as he walked and pulled the undead on to the next step.
Clang
The undead missed again and looked towards Thomas curiously. Thomas was considering just throwing him off the railing, but they wouldn't guarantee they wouldn't start jumping again.
After 21 steps and around an hour, Thomas had finally dragged the undead onto the roof.
"Raugh!"
It seemed to thank Thomas once more, but he ignored it and went back to dragging the "A.C." towards the edge. In the end, Thomas had found a broken "A.C.", "Microwave", and a large metal "Fan".
He struggled to position them until he finally got them just right.
His plan was simple: drop hard objects on people trying to use the alleyway as a shortcut to the 117 store.
"Gaugh?"
Thomas' new friend started to approach the broken appliances curiously. He had seen Thomas' actions but could not figure out why he would do any of it.
"Raogh!"
Thomas immediately grabbed onto the undead and pulled him away. Getting everything setup was a struggle and a waste of his time if it was ruined now.
"…through here!"
Though it was faint, Thomas could hear voices and footsteps as it echoed from the alley. It was finally time to catch some food.
