The plane had just landed in the Philippines from Japan.
Mildred walked toward the exit area where her driver was waiting.
She went straight to her condo and immediately dialed Tom's number—but he didn't answer.
She changed her clothes and waited.
She didn't hesitate.
She knew Tom would call her back.
After a few minutes, he did.
But this time, Mildred didn't answer.
A few seconds later, he called again.
This time, she picked up.
"Tom," she said softly.
"Hi… how are you?" he asked.
Mildred sat down on her bed.
"Fine… I was trying to move on," she said quietly.
Silence followed.
Neither of them spoke.
"I'm so—" Tom began, but she interrupted him.
"Please… I can't do this," she said, her voice breaking. "Please… you know how much I love you."
"You know I can't," Tom replied softly. "This is the best way… you know I love you too, but I can't hurt you anymore."
"Please, Tom… I can't live without you," Mildred cried.
Then she ended the call.
