"Yes, we do, but you make her do everything for you; that's why Shantel and Julien cannot do anything."
"Hear what I am saying today, Ken, one of these days she will end up in the street."
Ken could not control his laugh, "You fool, because of you, she is living in the street, leaving all her luxury for you to enjoy."
"Ken, can you just shut your mouth? What can't you understand, because of me, the business is running."
"That's because you love easy money and you control Daniel, who never liked to quarrel, so he gives in just like Shawney."
"You call me a fool and treat someone else's child better than your own."
"Because she loves me, my own don't even give me water, all they want is what I have."
"Yeah, like if you have anything to give, one of these days we might get news she is either dead or in jail. Have you seen the dress she was wearing? It's twice the price that the girls were wearing?"
"Have you ever taken into consideration that the Lord had blessed her with that dress?"
"People aren't blessed others with such gifts, especially someone they don't know."
"You, my dear, may never see such a blessing in your entire lifetime, nor your children, but that child is walking in God's blessing every day."
Hearing footsteps, Mitch walks away, thinking, 'Uncle Ken is right, people see Shawney, and bless her, she never asks. Joseph said she ministered to the people in their situations, and the families are so happy with the change in their lives that they give her tokens of appreciation. She does not turn anyone down; whatever they give, she accepts and blesses them. Uncle loves her very much, and he understands her more than her brothers and sisters. Uncle is right, God is blessing her, and she deserves everything that follows that blessing.'
About to knock on his parents' door, Mitch stopped when he heard his Dad say, "Paula, Train ask my consent for Shawney to marry Torren."
"Honey, those two children are now adults and don't need our permission."
"I know, honey, but he was just saying that Torren and Shawney are happy together."
Walking away, Mitch agrees with Mr MacCarty's plan, "Watching those two last night, they were happy, they were a perfect match. I should speak with Shawney and then with Joseph. He's Torren's doctor and will know how to convince him without drawing any suspicion."
Entering the breakfast room, noticing everyone sitting at the table eating as Shawney serve them, and none seem concerned if she eats or not. "Shawney, come and sit with me and let us eat something. Whoever needs anything else, they can help themselves, and I need to speak with you."
"Sorry, Mitch, I have an errand to run; whatever you have to say will have to wait until I return."
Ignoring Mitch's words, Meg wanted to prove that Shawney would do what she asked. "Shawney, can you bring me another sandwich, please?"
"Sorry, Meg, I am running late. You can get whatever you want and also help others."
Angry with them for ordering her around, "Don't you all feel ashamed for ordering Shawney around, like some servant girl. Not because she doesn't say no; that gives you the right to treat her in that manner. And the shameful thing is your wife and husband do the same."
"Mitch, she is our sister, so stay out of it." Feeling a bit embarrassed, Meg was now angry because Shawney had defied her in front of the others.
Mitch was so aggrieved by their selfish behaviour, "You are right, I should not meddle, but when she has her own family, I will see that you all get zilch."
"She doesn't want to get married. I recall the few young men Dad brought home for her to get married, and she turned them down; she liked living like this." Lynsie replies, also angry with Mitch butting in.
"Lynsie is right, Mitch, she likes living with every pretty face that comes along. If she gets married, how will she go from man to man?"
Shantel, being a bit angry with her mom for her unruly words, said, "Mom, will you stop that? Sometimes you really go overboard. However, she lives her life; it's her choice. If she is happy, we should also be happy for her."
"Hearing you all makes me sick. That's the person who took care of you all, and none of you seems to care or appreciate what she did. I am glad she is strong, Torren was not so strong, the ill treatment he got from his stepmother, brothers and sisters drives him out of his mind."
Joan stopped eating and asked, "You mean that person Shawney introduced to us is mad? Good Lord, he could have knocked me down last night?"
Mitch retorts, "Yes, Aunty, he could have, but Shawney have helped him a lot since she keeps ministering to him, so now he has learned to control his temper. She might not be worth anything to you all, but the people she helps appreciate her and bless her. I want you to see something, so just sit back and wait there for a few minutes."
Running up to Shawney's room, Mitch took her gift bag and then returned to the breakfast room.
Spreading out her gifts side by side, observing how his Aunt's eyes were scoping out each piece of jewellery. Meg asks, "Are those for us, Mitch?"
"I know you will like it, but all these are gifts Shawney get for helping people."
"I like this one. When she returns, I will ask her; she never refuses any of us."
"Not if I have anything to do with that. From what I see, you all don't deserve anything she has."
"Mitch, stop that?"
