Chapter 193 - 193: The Alliance of the Oppressed

The nightmare banquet ended, and the clan leaders left the ducal palace one after another, dragging the trailing robes of bitter defeat and deep brokenness. Their steps were heavy, as though each man bore a mountain of shame on his shoulders. They did not dare exchange glances in the hallways or speak to one another at the gates, for the eyes of spies and the ears of killers still lurked at every corner and behind every column.

Each leader boarded his lavish carriage decorated with his clan's crest, a carriage that now appeared nothing more than a moving prison. The carriages departed in different directions through the dark streets of Seiron, under a sky that had begun to shed a light, cold drizzle adding to the night's bleakness.

Inside each carriage, a leader sat alone in the darkness, rubbing his face with trembling hands, thinking in despair about how to protect his family, his trade, and his clan members from this new tyrant who knew no mercy and no honor. They had been coerced into betrayal, and betrayal has a taste that resembles ash in the mouth.

But Dex Williams was not about to allow these men to go home shattered and stripped of will. He knew as a strategist that the lethal military power he and his father possessed was capable of crushing Sylvester physically, but he needed these leaders for something far more important: he needed them as a symbol of political legitimacy, as a popular shield that would prevent chaos in the province after the tyrant's fall, and would prove to the Empire that the rebellion had ended.

Dex donned a long black hooded cloak concealing his features and launched across the rain-slicked rooftops like a furious specter, expertly tracking the paths of the six carriages. At a precisely calculated moment, and on a pre-arranged signal, his plan was set into motion.

In dark and deserted side streets, far from the monitored main roads, small groups of seasoned warriors in dark gray cloaks appeared. They were from the Old Guard under the command of the veteran officer Torin. With high military professionalism and without creating any commotion, they intercepted the carriages in succession. They did not attack, and they did not raise their swords, instead they stopped the drivers and, in a firm yet non-hostile tone, redirected the carriages toward a single predetermined destination: the Temple of the Old Gods, an abandoned structure at the neglected eastern outskirts of the city.

The temple was a desolate place reeking of antiquity and oblivion. Its stone roof had partially collapsed, and its enormous granite statues of the forgotten gods were covered in dark green algae and climbing vines. It was the one place in Seiron that the Shadow Organization and Sylvester's guards did not monitor, because they, by virtue of their modern beliefs, considered it a cursed place haunted by angry spirits.

The six surviving leaders gathered inside the temple's wide circular courtyard, open to the sky, beneath the light rain that had begun falling more heavily, washing their pale faces. They stood in a close circle, surrounded by the few personal guards who had reclaimed their weapons after leaving the palace, their eyes darting in terror through the darkness. They were frightened to the point of death, absolutely certain that Sylvester had manipulated them, that he had gathered them in this cursed place to eliminate them collectively and bury them far from any eyes, now that he had their signatures.

"What in the hell is happening?!" shouted Lord Kaylen, the merchant clan leader, the portly man, in a voice trembling from terror and cold, struggling to draw a small ornate dagger he had hidden in his boot, a weapon insufficient to peel an apple before real warriors. "Did Sylvester send you to finish the job? Was our signature not enough for him? Was Orgon's blood not enough for him?"

At the sight of shadows moving between the crumbling columns and approaching them, one of the leaders' personal guards lost his nerve and lunged with his sword drawn toward the nearest gray shadow, ready to sell his life dearly.

Suddenly, without any prior warning, someone descended from the sky. Dex leaped from the top of a massive, crumbling statue of the Ancient God of War and dropped precisely into the center of the circle, with the lightness and agility of a predatory panther. Not a sound emerged from his landing save a soft thud of leather boots on wet ground. A faint blue aura, cold and majestic, surrounded his body in the midst of the rain, dispersing the surrounding darkness.

"Stop!" Dex barked in a commanding and sharp voice carrying a tone of authority that admitted no defiance, his words reverberating between the stone columns.

"A shadow assassin!" screamed the same panicked guard, and he did not stop but lunged with his full force, directing a lethal stab of his broadsword toward Dex's cloak-covered chest.

Dex did not shift from his place by a single hair's breadth, and did not so much as blink. With complete coldness, he extended his bare right hand. At the moment the sword blade nearly pierced his chest, Dex caught the sharp steel blade with his bare hand. His hand did not bleed, dense mana concentrated around his leather glove like an invisible shield. Then, with a swift motion and a single deliberate squeeze of his fingers, he shattered the thick steel blade as though it were nothing but a dry, brittle tree branch. Fragments of the metal sword scattered across the stone floor with a ringing, staccato sound.

The guard stumbled back in pure terror and fell on his back, and the blood of the leaders froze in their veins before this terrifying display of physical and magical power.

Dex raised his right hand high in the air, revealing it to all beneath the faint lightning that flashed across the sky. On his index finger gleamed a large gold ring with a deep crimson rare ruby at its center, engraved with unmistakable skill bearing the crest of the Roaring Royal Lion: the absolute symbol of the Williams family's sovereignty. This was the Ducal Ring, the official seal worn in the province only by the family's legitimate lord.

"This ring..." murmured Jarik, the blacksmiths' clan leader, in a strangled voice and with widened eyes, stepping forward in disbelief. He had been the one who personally supervised the recasting of this ring for Lord Marcus twenty years ago upon his assumption of governance. "This, this is Lord Marcus's ring!"

Slowly and confidently, Dex raised his other hand and lowered the black hood from his head, revealing his face completely in the faint torchlight that Torin's men had lit around them. It was not the face of a frightened child, it was the face of a man forged by pain. His blue eyes radiated a sharp, piercing, and terrifying brilliance, no longer the sparkle of the pampered boy and naive heir they had known, but the brilliance of a seasoned commander who had returned from death to hold the living to account.

"Dex Williams?!" Lord Kaylen cried out in absolute astonishment, stepping back two paces as though seeing a ghost risen from the grave. "You, you are alive? Sylvester just told us, and produced reports confirming that you died in the forest, that you were..."

"Sylvester is a liar," Dex cut him off in a voice sharp and final as a guillotine blade. "Sylvester is a liar, a killer, and a traitor in whose veins poison flows in place of blood."

Dex lowered his hand and stepped a pace toward them. "I am very much alive. And the more important news, the news that would make Sylvester soil his bed from terror if he knew it, is that Lord Marcus has not died and has not surrendered to their poisons. My father has awakened from his coma. He is in full health, with a power you have never seen before, and he is now in a safe place, readying his armor and sharpening his great sword."

A collective gasp passed among those standing in the rain, a mixture of shock, disbelief, and a sudden explosion of hope. "Marcus, the Lion has awakened?"

Dex walked among them with steady steps, looking into their eyes one by one, connecting with their shattered souls. "I was there tonight. I watched in silence from the high balcony. I saw what he did to you, I saw how he humiliated the dignity you had built over decades. I saw how he used terror to make you kneel, and how he killed the brave Elder Orgon in cold blood without his eyelid so much as flickering."

Dex paused, and his tone shifted from sharpness to the containing authority of a commander. "Sylvester believes, with the stupidity of cowards, that he has secured your absolute loyalty through fear and by bargaining with your lives. But I have come to you tonight, in this sacred and forgotten place, to offer you something entirely different, something that cannot be bought with gold or seized with poison. I offer you the opportunity for vengeance, and I offer you the restoration of your stolen dignity."

Dex stopped directly before the trembling Lord Kaylen and placed his hand firmly on his shoulder. "He blackmails you with the future of your children, the livelihoods of your clans, and your lives. But I tell you now, as the legitimate heir and the voice of the Lion, Sylvester's false rule will last only a single day more. Tomorrow is the so-called Coronation Day, and tomorrow will be the day of his catastrophic fall."

"But, Lord Dex..." mumbled the farmers' representative in despair and hesitation, trying to cling to logic. "Sylvester controls everything. The regular guard obeys his orders, his mercenaries are in every street, and the Shadow Organization surrounds the palace like a bracelet."

"Armies follow the dominant power, and the Organization follows whoever pays the money and guarantees its survival," Dex answered with a glacial confidence that extinguished all their doubts. "My father and I possess the overwhelming force that will crush them utterly, and we have the plan that will render them blind and deaf. I do not ask you to bear swords and face mercenaries, your blood is too precious to be squandered. All I want from you is one single thing: a decisive political role."

Dex stepped back to view them all. "Tomorrow at noon, in the coronation square, I want you to attend in your full finery and appearance. I want you to feign complete submission and loyalty to Sylvester, make him feel the intoxication of blind victory. Wait only until I give my signal. When the blue flames ignite in the heart of Seiron's sky, and when you hear the Lion's roar shaking the palace walls, I want you in that moment to pull your men and your guards back, and to declare with a single audible voice your repudiation of Sylvester, and your legitimate allegiance to Marcus's return. Isolate Sylvester politically before the people, and my father and I will take responsibility for isolating him physically from the world of the living."

The leaders looked at one another. The choice was dangerous and represented a leap into the unknown, but seeing the Williams heir standing before them alive, confident, and surrounded by a mysterious power, and above all the news of Lord Marcus's return, breathed the spirit of hope back into their dead souls, and ignited in their hearts the fire of vengeance for what had befallen their colleague Orgon.

Jarik, the blacksmiths' clan leader, the man with knotted muscles, stepped forward and struck his fist against his chest over his heart. "For Elder Orgon," he said in a thick, trembling voice. "And for the honor of Seiron that has been defiled."

Lord Kaylen stepped forward, wiped the rain from his face, and bowed with a deep respect he had never shown Sylvester. "We are with you, Lord Dex, to the end," he said in a steady voice. "The Alliance of the Oppressed will stand with you tomorrow in the square, and we will be the rock upon which Sylvester's arrogance shatters."

Under the heavy rain, in the presence of the ancient gods' statues, the alliance was born, the alliance that would tear the throne of betrayal apart.
