SLOANE POV
Rowe let out a long, happy sigh, his eyes closing as he fell fast asleep on my knee twenty minutes in. I held very calmly, keeping my leg steady, and kept reading in an even quieter whisper until Emmet drifted off to sleep too.
Jasper stayed awake. He always stays awake, watching me from the big wing chair with those old, smart eyes,
"Is grandma not coming back?" he asked.
"Probably not," I said.
He thought about this very seriously. Then, he got up, crawled into the small space between me and the arm of the chair, and pressed his face into my shoulder without saying a word as I put my arm around him.
Monday came and went. Then Tuesday. The house became much quieter, and the tension finally started to leave. The days blurred into each other, long and slow, giving me too much time to think.
