Chapter 15 - The Virtual Trap

Chapter 15: The Paper Pulse

The heavy rain above the mountain might have subsided, but inside the vault, the air remained thick, charged with the weight of centuries. Ruhi reached toward the glass cabinets, her fingertips hovering over the cold handle before she summoned the resolve to pull. She withdrew a thick, leather-bound diary, its surface weathered and mapped with spider-web cracks of age. Unlike the sterile, artificial glow of a digital tablet, this object felt warm and undeniably real in her grasp. As she gingerly turned a page, the faint, earthy scent of aging paper wafted upward—a raw, organic aroma that had been purged from the recycled, sterilized atmosphere of Neo-Veridia.

"Aryan, look," Ruhi whispered, her voice trembling with awe as she traced the faded ink. "These aren't corporate logs or system-optimized status reports. These are memories. Someone actually documented the smell of genuine rain, long before the company's 'Weather Optimization' protocols were even a concept."

Aryan stowed his homemade EMP device, his skepticism dissolving into a cold, grim realization. He surveyed the rows of shelves, his eyes wide. "If the Director discovers that a repository of raw, unedited human emotion exists outside the network, he won't just attempt to delete it. He will incinerate this mountain to dust."

Suddenly, the analog speaker overhead shrieked with a burst of jagged static. The automated voice, once calm, now sounded fractured and strained: "Archivist, internal perimeter breach detected. Security sensors at Sector 4 are offline."

Ruhi's heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. "The diversion failed. They've realized the main shaft was nothing but a hollow ghost lead."

On the console's flickering monitor, the thermal clusters shifted with chilling purpose. The Erasers were no longer aimless; they were converging directly on the Archive's coordinates. The feed showed them deploying heavy-duty 'De-fragmenters'—massive, pulse-based weapons designed to shatter physical matter at the molecular level. They weren't just coming to arrest them; they were coming to dissolve the entire chamber into nothingness.

Ruhi's hands danced across the ancient console. She realized this wasn't merely a library; it was a fortress engineered to weather a siege. Her eyes locked onto a rusted mechanical lever jutting from the side of the desk. She seized it, putting the full weight of her body into pulling it down.

With a deafening, metallic groan that vibrated through the floorboards, massive iron shutters descended over the cabinets, sealing the ancient history behind impenetrable plating.

"We have to go!" Ruhi shouted, her voice barely audible over the screeching of grinding metal. "But we can't leave empty-handed!"

"We can't haul an entire library, Ruhi!" Aryan yelled, holding his canvas pack open. "Grab only the essentials!"

Ruhi's gaze darted to a small, silver metallic canister nestled in a velvet-lined slot at the center of the console. It bore a single, hand-etched label: Project: Echo-Back. Without a heartbeat of hesitation, she snatched the heavy box and thrust it into her bag.

As they sprinted toward a narrow extraction vent at the rear of the chamber, a thunderous explosion shattered the main entrance. The reinforced iron doors buckled inward, groaning under the force of the breach. The Erasers had arrived.

Ruhi didn't glance back. She no longer carried just a paper map; she bore the actual, tangible voice of a world the Director had spent decades trying to lobotomize. As they dove into the pitch-black tunnels, she felt the solid, reassuring weight of the silver box against her spine. It was heavy—but for the first time since fleeing the gates of Neo-Veridia, that weight didn't feel like a burden.

It felt like a weapon.
