Chapter 3: The Glitch in the Feed
Riya spent the next forty-eight hours in a daze. Since that cold, robotic voice echoed inside her head—[Task 1 Completed: Empathy Drained to 0%]—she hadn't slept. She was waiting for it to happen again, but instead, her follower count just kept exploding.
By Tuesday evening, the excitement of the "Accident Stream" left behind a strange, hollow feeling. As she edited the final video, making the delivery boy's blood look brighter and more dramatic, she felt a haunting parallel to that day two years ago when Aryan had told her, "You're just a spectator in your own life, Riya. One day, the life you're filming will come to consume you."
She shook the memory away. He was wrong, she told herself.
Suddenly, her main monitor flickered. A notification popped up with a static hiss:
[New Message: User_404] "You missed the best part, Riya. Look closer at the 04:12 mark."
Riya zoomed in on the timeline. In the background, standing behind the crowd, was a man. He wasn't recording; he was staring straight into Riya's lens with an intensity that felt eerily familiar—it was the same weary, haunted look Aryan used to give her before he left. He tore a page from a notebook and dropped it.
A second later, another notification arrived. An image file. It was a photo of Riya taken from the ground—the victim's perspective. In it, her face looked predatory, her eyes glowing with the blue light of her phone.
The caption read: "Who is filming the filmmaker?"
Riya's heart pounded. She tried to block the user, but the button was greyed out. Suddenly, her comments changed. Thousands of messages vanished, replaced by a single, repeating command: CHECK THE FRUIT STALL.
Panicking, she ran to the city center. The rain had washed away the blood, but tucked in a pavement crack, she found a crumpled note. The handwriting was shaky:
"The audience is hungry, Riya. But they don't want to watch the accident anymore. They want to watch the vulture fall."
She looked up. Three teenagers stood on the corner, their faces hidden by hoodies. They weren't talking. They just stood there with their phones raised, pointing straight at her. The green recording lights glowed like wild animals in the dark.
Terrified, Riya pulled out her phone. A new notification appeared, making her blood run cold:
