Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 The Echo Behind Him

Chapter 26: The Echo Behind Him

The first thing Renyu felt was the weight.

Not the weight of the black ring anymore.

That had already settled.

This was something stranger.

A pull from across his back. A faint tightness behind the shoulders. A sensation like threads stretched too far, trembling just before they found the correct note.

Then came the pain.

Not the wild pain from the absorption. Not the tearing burn from the moth sound blades. But a dull, deep soreness, spread across his body.

After that came the word.

Broken earth beneath him. Damp forest air. The smell of splintered wood and blood and something faintly metallic left behind by the moth ruined wings. The low hum of spirit power still lingering in the clearing. A few distant insect calls that sounded cautious, as though even Sunset Forest had decided to keep its distance from this place.

Renyu opened his eyes.

The light had changed.

It was no longer midday. The last gold of the afternoon had begun to lean across the ruined clearing, catching in the cracks he himself had driven through the earth.

He blinked once.

The black ring turned behind him.

Slowly and steadily.

Fourth ring.

For one quiet beat, he simply looked at it.

Then Qin Ming voice came from somewhere to his left.

"You're awake."

Renyu turned his head.

That really a bad idea.

Everything from his neck to his ribs reminded him at once that he had fought a spirit beast close to fifty thousand years old like a madman and then sat down to absorb its ring as though it were an ordinary errand.

Now it came back at once. Even though the wound already heal, the effect of the fight still there.

Still—

he was awake.

He looked at Qin Ming, at Yu Tianheng standing near him with arms folded, at Dugu Yan trying very hard to look unimpressed and failing, at Ye Lingling nearest to him with her flower spirit already withdrawn, and finally at Lin Su, who remained slightly apart, as though he had never once doubted that he would still need to be here when Renyu opened his eyes.

Renyu swallowed once.

Then, because it is still him even after all that, he said the first thing that came naturally.

"You all look terrible."

Yu Tianheng let out a short breath through his nose.

Dugu Yan stared. "You wake up from that and decide to insult us first?"

"It's not an insult." Renyu's voice was rough, but stable. "It's just a question."

"That's worse."

Ye Lingling, without expression, said, "If you're talking nonsense, then you're probably fine."

Renyu looked at her. "You healed me."

"It's my job."

"Thank you."

She blinked once, perhaps not expecting the directness of it, then gave the smallest nod.

Dugu Yan clicked her tongue. "She's right. You were a disaster."

Renyu considered the blasted clearing around them, then the dead moth, then the black ring circling behind him.

"…Yes," he admitted. "That seems fair."

He do not remember much what he done during the fight, it's like something take over him and he forgot about the pain. Even after the heal he still continues to absorb the ring.

The pain from absorbing the ring over the limit of his body that should be 20000 years that he now absorbing 50000 years left him with pain all over his body.

That made Yu Tianheng look away for a moment, and Renyu was almost certain the man was hiding a smile.

Qin Ming did not permit the moment to drift too far.

"What your fourth ring abilities?"

Only the question that mattered most to a teacher who had just watched a student survive something that should have killed him.

Renyu straightened slightly.

That brought the strange weight at his back into clearer focus again, but he ignored it for the moment.

"Fourth Soul Ring," he said, voice settling. "Resonance Barrier."

Qin Ming eyes sharpened. "Explain it properly."

Renyu looked down at his hand once, feeling the ring nature now that it was fully his.

It answered more clearly than before.

"Defensive soul skill," he said. "I can generate a vibrating barrier of phonic force around my body, a weapon, or an ally. It weakens direct impact, disperses part of elemental damage, and reduces disruptive mental or sonic interference."

Ye Lingling gaze changed first in shock

Yu Tianheng felt incredulous.

Even Dugu Yan arms loosened slightly where they had been folded.

Renyu continued, quieter now, because this part mattered to him more than the others yet fully understood.

"It also stabilizes the active Symphogear form." He touched his chest lightly where the converter crystal rested hidden beneath flesh and bone. "Under pressure, the transitions will be smoother."

Qin Ming was silent for one long moment.

Then he said, "A fifty-thousand-year defensive fourth ring."

Dugu Yan exhaled slowly. "That is crazy." Usually people will get a defense abilities that protect himself or an ally but he got both.

Yu Tianheng glanced at her. "Jealous?"

"Yes."

The answer came so immediately that even Qin Ming smile by the smallest amount.

Dugu Yan noticed and scowled. "Don't look at me like that. Any normal person would be jealous."

"I am normal?" Renyu asked.

She pointed at the cratered clearing around them. "You lost the right to use that word hours ago."

Ye Lingling looked at Renyu again, more thoughtfully this time. "A barrier that can also protect others."

Renyu nodded. "Yes."

"That's useful."

Dugu Yan turned to her. "That's all you have to say?"

Ye Lingling seemed to think about it.

Then: "Very useful."

Yu Tianheng actually laughed this time.

Short. Low. Real.

Qin Ming ignored all of them again.

Not because he did not hear. Because the shift in Renyu shoulders had finally become too obvious to miss and something that they ignore all this while because of their excitement seeing a soul elder... No... A sould ancestor now having a 50000 years of spirit ring.

The teacher gaze narrowed.

"How about you introduce us to what on your back?"

The question froze the clearing.

Renyu blinked.

Then the strange weight returned to the center of his awareness as though the words themselves had pulled it forward. He had been pushing it aside since waking, naming it only as discomfort, soreness, unfamiliar tension.

Now that he focused on it, it was impossible to mistake.

Something was there.

Not pain alone.

A structure.

He moved carefully, and the sensation sharpened—an extension of himself that had not existed before, folded close, quiet for now, but very much present.

Dugu Yan had already taken one step to the side to see more clearly. Then her eyes widened.

"…What."

Yu Tianheng looked past Renyu shoulder.

Then he stopped speaking entirely.

Renyu turned as much as his sore body allowed.

At first he saw only the long shadow the thing cast against the broken earth.

Then he truly felt it.

Something at his upper back shifted in answer to his attention.

Not painfully.

Almost eagerly.

The structure unfurled by a fraction.

Ye Lingling drew in a small breath.

Qin Ming said nothing at all.

Because what rose behind Renyu shoulders could not be mistaken for cloth, armor, or lingering spirit power. It extended from the upper back in a pale azure frame, shaped somewhat like Daur da Bláo wing form, elegant but unnatural in its geometry. Between the frame ran fine resonance filaments, stretched like strings across a wing-shaped lattice, too delicate to be called membrane and too deliberate to be called bone alone.

It looked like several impossible things fused together: harp strings, wing membranes, and relic circuitry made flesh.

The filaments gave one soft trembling vibration.

A note, nearly too quiet to hear, passed through the ruined clearing.

Dugu Yan face lost all pretense of calm.

"No."

Yu Tianheng said, equally low, "That is not…"

"It is," Qin Ming said.

His voice came out flatter than usual.

Not because he lacked certainty.

Because he had too much of it.

Renyu slowly lifted a hand toward the new structure, stopping just before touching it. The thing responded anyway. One line of azure light flowed along a filament, then another, like strings waking one after the other.

He could feel what it was before anyone else named it.

That same resonance from the moth. That wrongness between true and false. That second line hidden behind the first.

The answer formed in him without effort.

"Mirror-Chorus Resonance Core," he said quietly.

The name settled over the clearing.

Ye Lingling repeated it under her breath, as though testing whether it sounded any less absurd a second time. "Mirror-Chorus…"

Dugu Yan finally found her voice again. "You're naming it?"

Renyu looked at her. "It already knows what it is."

"That is not reassuring."

"It wasn't meant to be."

Yu Tianheng stepped closer, eyes fixed on the azure frame and vibrating strings. "An external spirit bone."

No one corrected him.

Because there was nothing else it could be.

And because saying the words aloud made the entire situation abruptly worse.

Qin Ming expression hardened at once.

Dugu Yan looked from the wing-like structure to the dead moth and then back to Renyu, disbelief giving way to something very close to open envy.

"Of course," she said. "Of course you kill a beast close to fifty thousand years, take its ring, and then take this too."

Renyu raised a brow. "You sound resentful."

"I am resentful."

"That seems honest."

"It's not honesty. It's pain."

Yu Tianheng gave her a sidelong glance. "You said earlier any normal person would be jealous."

"Yes."

"So now?"

Dugu Yan looked at the thing behind Renyu back again and answered with complete sincerity.

"Now I want to rob him."

That broke the tension hard enough that even Renyu laughed—briefly, painfully, but truly.

Ye Lingling, to her own irritation, almost smiled.

Lin Su, who had remained silent through the entire exchange, finally spoke.

"What does it do?"

The question cut straight through everything else.

Lin Su was not here to admire impossible luck. He was here to understand what new danger and new value had just attached itself to the crown prince chosen boy.

Renyu settled his breathing and let his attention sink into the thing at his back.

The answer came in layers.

Not all of it. Not yet.

It is enough.

"It lets me manifest a clone that can use one of my Symphogear armor," he said.

The clearing stilled again.

Yu Tianheng eyes narrowed. "A clone?"

"Yes."

"So you can use it at the same time?" Dugu Yan asked. She remember that Renyu use a sword form before and then use the fist style form.

Renyu nodded once.

Ye Lingling was the one who asked the next question. "How?"

Renyu hand lowered to his lap again as he sorted the sensation into words.

"It manifests as an echo," he said. "Semi-autonomous. It can wear one of the seven Symphogear armors I'm not currently using." He paused, then added, because accuracy mattered now more than impressiveness, "but it cannot use my spirit ring abilities."

"That would have been too overpowered if it can use your spirit ring abilities," Dugu Yan muttered.

"It still consumes my spirit power," Renyu said.

Yu Tianheng folded his arms again. "How much?"

"I don't know yet."

Qin Ming gaze remained hard. "What else?"

Renyu felt the strings behind him tremble once more.

A song. Stored.

Not in his throat. Not in his current breath. Elsewhere.

"It can sing independently," he said slowly. "Using a song already inserted into it."

This time even Qin Ming composure slipped.

Not outwardly by much.

A second armor. Semi-autonomous. Even if it unable to use spirit ring skills, but still able to maintain its own stored song and form. It must be known that his attack skill most of them came from the relic itself. It did not depend on the spirit ring.

Dugu Yan stared openly now. "This is absurd."

Yu Tianheng did not disagree. "Yes."

Ye Lingling eyes remained on the azure frame. "Beautiful."

Everyone turned toward her.

Ye Lingling blinked once. "What?"

Dugu Yan looked offended on principle. "You can't just say that and then act surprised we heard it."

"It is beautiful."

Renyu glanced over his shoulder again.

She was right.

There was something eerie and elegant about it. The azure crystalline frame curved from his upper back with a shape that looked half wing, half instrument. The resonance filaments stretched between the frame lines in delicate tension, and when one of them vibrated, the others answered faintly, as though the entire structure existed to be played rather than merely worn.

One side of the frame shifted a little wider.

The strings glowed.

Then the movement stilled again.

Qin Ming stepped forward at last.

"Enough of that."

The word brought everyone back from their musing.

He looked at Renyu first.

"Can you move?"

"Yes."

"Can you fight?"

Renyu considered the soreness in his body, the lingering drain from the absorption, the strange new weight at his back, and decided that lying would only make the next hour worse.

"Not well."

"Good." Qin Ming turned his gaze over the others one by one. "Then listen carefully."

No one interrupted.

"What happened here does not leave this forest in loose tongues," he said. "Not the ring. Not the fight. Not that." His eyes flicked once toward the structure behind Renyu shoulders. "Especially not that."

Dugu Yan expression sharpened. "You think we'd talk?"

Qin Ming looked at her.

She exhaled once and looked away. "Fine. I understand."

Yu Tianheng nodded. "No one outside the necessary people hears it from me."

Ye Lingling simply said, "Understood."

Lin Su was the last.

The crown hidden man met Qin Ming gaze and said, "The crown will know."

"That," Qin Ming said, "is already beyond the reach of my preferences."

A faint tension passed between them.

Not conflict.

Recognition.

Both men understood perfectly that once they left Sunset Forest, this matter would rise above an academy field report.

Renyu sat quietly through it, the black fourth ring still turning behind him, the Mirror-Chorus Resonance Core folded half-open at his back like some sleeping azure instrument that had decided to become part of him forever.

Dugu Yan looked at him once more, then muttered, "You are the most irritating person I've met in years."

Renyu glanced at her. "That sounds personal."

"It is."

Yu Tianheng shook his head once. "Recover first."

Renyu almost replied.

Then stopped, because the absurdity of the sentence, the ruined clearing, the black ring, the azure wing-like bone-frame behind him, and the fact that he was still alive all hit him at once.

So instead, he let out a slow breath and looked toward the deepening forest.

The expedition had begun as a ring hunt.

It had become something else entirely.

And from this point onward, every step he took back toward Heaven Dou would carry more than a fourth ring and a victory.

It would carry a secret that had grown wings.

While thinking that he retract the wing into his back.
