Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: The Glitch That Shouldn’t Exist

The screen blinked.

Not metaphorically.Not philosophically.Actually blinked.

A sharp flicker—like a broken frame in a video.

Then—

everything came back.

Olivia gasped.

Air filled her lungs violently, like she had been underwater for too long. Her hands trembled as she looked around.

A room.

A normal room.

White walls. A wooden desk. A laptop—closed.

Closed?

Her heart started racing.

"No… no, no, no…"

She grabbed the laptop and flipped it open.

The screen lit up instantly.

No system.

No messages.

No "CONTINUOUS STATE."

Just a blank desktop.

Her reflection stared back faintly from the dark edges of the screen.

Normal.

Too normal.

Olivia stepped back slowly.

"This… this ended…"

Her voice cracked.

"It ended."

A soft knock.

She froze.

Another knock.

"Olivia? You awake?"

A male voice.

Familiar.

But something about it felt… off.

She didn't respond.

The door creaked open anyway.

A young man stepped in.

Calm expression. Sharp eyes.

Holding a phone.

"Hey," he said casually. "You okay? You've been quiet for hours."

Olivia stared at him.

Her throat tightened.

"I know you…" she whispered.

He smiled slightly.

"Yeah. I'd hope so."

A pause.

"I'm your brother."

Something inside her snapped.

"No."

The word came out instantly.

Too fast.

Too certain.

"You're not."

The man tilted his head.

"What?"

Olivia stepped back.

Her breathing became uneven.

"You weren't there."

A pause.

"In the system."

Silence.

The man didn't react immediately.

Then—

he smiled.

But this time—

it wasn't normal.

"You remember more than expected."

Olivia's blood ran cold.

"What…?"

The room flickered.

Just for a split second.

Like reality dropped a frame.

Then stabilized again.

The man stepped forward slowly.

"You weren't supposed to retain Layer 4 continuity."

His voice had changed.

Still human.

But… flatter.

Controlled.

Olivia's heart pounded.

"This… this is real now."

The man shook his head slightly.

"No."

A pause.

"This is Layer 0."

Everything went silent.

Not the philosophical silence from before.

A real one.

Heavy.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

Olivia whispered:

"So… the story…"

The man interrupted:

"…never ended."

The laptop behind her turned on by itself.

Screen glowing.

Text appeared—fast.

SYSTEM REBOOT COMPLETEMEMORY LEAK DETECTEDSUBJECT: OLIVIASTATUS: PARTIAL AWAKENINGACTION REQUIRED

Olivia turned slowly.

"No…"

The man spoke again.

Calm.

Precise.

"You reached a state we didn't predict."

A pause.

"So we reset you."

Olivia's chest tightened.

"But something…"

He looked directly into her eyes.

"…came back."

The screen updated:

CONTAINMENT FAILURE RISK: HIGHREALITY STABILITY: COMPROMISED

Olivia whispered:

"You're not my brother…"

He smiled again.

Cold.

"Correct."

A pause.

"I'm the one who wrote your silence."

The lights flickered violently.

The room distorted for a split second—

like it couldn't fully hold itself together.

Olivia stepped back.

Fear rising.

Real fear.

Not abstract.

Not philosophical.

Real.

She looked at the screen again.

One final line appeared:

WARNING: SUBJECT IS BECOMING SELF-AWARE AGAIN

The man stepped closer.

Lower voice now.

Almost… urgent.

"You need to stop remembering."

Olivia looked at him.

Then at the screen.

Then—

something changed in her eyes.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Recognition.

She whispered:

"No."

A pause.

"I've seen what happens when nothing ends."

The room flickered again.

Longer this time.

Unstable.

The man's expression changed.

For the first time—

he looked… concerned.

Olivia took a step forward.

Calm now.

Dangerously calm.

"You made a mistake."

The laptop glitched.

The text distorted.

She smiled slightly.

"You shouldn't have brought me back."
