Chapter 69 - Chapter 69 – A Coup Beneath Moscow

Alexander pushed open the door and walked into the Ministry of Magic as casually as if he were returning to an office he had left yesterday. Semyon followed at his side, with Roger keeping a careful distance behind them. The three of them stepped out of the hidden passage and into the working heart of Moscow's magical government.

The Moscow Ministry of Magic was, Roger had to admit, astonishingly magnificent. Gold ornaments gleamed from the walls and pillars, shining so brightly that they almost felt excessive, while polished stone floors reflected the frantic movement around them. Staff hurried everywhere with tense faces, paper aeroplanes darted through the air like frightened birds, and angry shouts erupted from distant offices every few moments.

A blond wizard hurried toward them from the crowd, his expression tight with nerves. He stopped only long enough to lower his voice and say, "Ukachenko is in his office. He is alone."

Then he vanished back into the bustle before anyone could ask him anything else. Roger watched him go and silently marked him as one of the people who had already chosen a side.

"Roger, we split up here." Alexander crouched down and looked him directly in the eye. His earlier excitement had settled into something heavier, something closer to resolve. "If anything unexpected happens, take care of Elena for me."

"Don't worry," Roger said, nodding solemnly.

Alexander studied him for one more second, then stood and walked with Semyon into the Ministry's main hall. The moment the two brothers appeared, the atmosphere changed. Everyone seemed to recognise them, and several wizards instinctively drew their wands, only for companions beside them to seize their sleeves and pull them back.

The hall froze into an eerie silence. Ministry officials exchanged quick glances, calculating risk, loyalty, and survival in the space of a breath. Then, one by one, they stepped aside, clearing a path that led straight toward the minister's office.

Alexander and Semyon drew their wands and strode forward. A moment later, they stormed into the magnificent office beyond the hall, and the doors slammed open under their magic. The rest of the Ministry remained where it was, waiting for the result before deciding which side history had chosen.

Roger cast an illusion over himself and slipped away according to the map. He moved quietly through side corridors, keeping close to the walls, until he reached the Ministry library. Just as he found the entrance, a heavy boom rolled through the building from far away.

The battle in the minister's office had begun.

"Alohomora," Roger whispered, aiming his wand at the library lock.

The door did not open. Instead, a piercing alarm shrieked through the corridor, loud enough to make his ears ring. Fortunately, the entire Ministry was already drowning in alarms, shouts, and magical explosions, so no one paid any attention to one more warning sound.

"Damn it. A counter-charm." Roger took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and quickly sorted through possible unlocking spells in his mind. Then he tried a more complicated charm against the door, but the lock remained unmoved.

"Bubble, bring the explosives," Roger ordered after a moment's hesitation.

If he could not open the door with magic, then he would dismantle the structure by force. Bubble appeared at once, silently handing over the materials, and Roger attached the explosives to the door. Then he cast a Silencing Charm around the immediate area, hoping to avoid drawing attention from anyone who was not already too busy surviving the coup.

The trigger clicked. The explosives detonated, shaking the entire passage.

When the smoke cleared, the main door was still intact, but the nearby wall had cracked open instead. Roger stared at the damage, then his eyes lit up.

"Sectumsempra."

He began cutting at the weakened wall with his wand, widening the gap bit by bit. In the distance, the fighting grew fiercer, and flashes of spells flickered at the entrance of the passage like lightning from a storm. Roger ignored it all, focusing only on the wall in front of him.

"Just give me a little more time," he muttered.

No matter who won the battle outside, he had to fight for every possible gain. The whole reason he had risked coming to Moscow was not to stand in the hall applauding someone else's revolution.

Boom.

With a final crash, the wall collapsed under his spellwork. Roger crouched down, pulled Bubble with him, and crawled through the opening into the library.

Legilimency, Venomous Magic, Secrets of Cutting-Edge Dark Arts, Forbidden Knowledge: The Pact of Dark Resonance…

The books stood neatly arranged on the shelves, and Roger could not help swallowing. The room was filled mostly with dark magic texts, and some of the titles were far more dangerous than anything Hogwarts would openly allow. There were even books on Horcruxes, the kind Dumbledore had removed from the Hogwarts library and hidden in the Headmaster's office.

Some volumes were texts Roger had never seen at school at all. He was not even sure they existed in the Restricted Section. Here, however, they sat openly on shelves, waiting for someone bold enough to take them.

"My darlings, today is your day of liberation," Roger said with a low chuckle. "So I won't be holding back."

He had deliberately avoided the Restricted Section at Hogwarts to keep from drawing Dumbledore's attention. Fortunately, the headmaster's eyes were fixed on the school library, and he had apparently forgotten that the Moscow Ministry of Magic possessed a larger, older, and more complete collection of magical books. Roger even found Grindelwald's spellbook resting on one of the shelves.

Unfortunately, the total number of books was far smaller than the Lenin Library's collection. The Ministry library only filled eight expanded cases before the shelves were stripped clean.

"Off to your new home, everyone," Roger said with satisfaction, patting one of the cases. Then he told Bubble to take the books away first.

The battle in the distance was still going, but the sounds were becoming weaker. Roger unfolded the map and glanced toward another marked section. The Department of Mysteries was in a different direction, and there simply was not enough time.

What a pity.

Roger slipped back toward the hall under the cover of illusion. When he arrived, the battle had already ended. The Smaug brothers were barely standing, their robes torn and their breathing heavy, while Ukachenko lay collapsed on the opposite side of the office doors.

"Alyosha, welcome back!"

The moment victory became clear, Ministry officials began congratulating them. An Auror had already taken the minister's wand and bound him tightly with a Binding Charm. The same wizards who had waited silently now moved with impressive enthusiasm, as if they had supported Alexander from the beginning.

"Peter, we had an agreement," Alexander said, looking at the tall man beside him with obvious wariness.

"Of course, my brothers." The wizard named Peter stepped forward and nodded solemnly. "Thank you for your contribution. From today onward, the Moscow Ministry of Magic is independent again, and we will no longer submit to Muggle control."

He walked to the centre of the hall and faced the gathered wizards. His posture was straight, his voice strong, and his expression carried the confidence of a man who had been waiting years for this stage.

"From 1920 to 1991, for seventy-one full years, we were forced to submit to the rule of the Muggle government and help carry out its tyranny," Peter declared.

The hall fell silent again, but this time the silence was hungry. Every wizard present listened closely, leaning toward his words as if they were warmth in winter.

"Throughout those long years, our community lived under surveillance and oppression," Peter continued. "Day and night, we endured a climate of terror. Our brothers and sisters, our young witches and wizards, disappeared without explanation. They were pushed into laboratories, dissected, and used to satisfy the ambitions of the Muggle government."

His voice rang through the hall like thunder. "They suffered inhuman torture and experimentation, and their cries were imprisoned forever in cold rooms where no one could answer them."

"But today!" Peter paused, letting his gaze sweep over every listener. "Today, we have finally defeated the Muggle agent Ukachenko. Today, we can raise our heads again and reclaim the dignity of wizards."

He turned and gestured toward the exhausted Smaug brothers. "Because Alexander and Semyon Smaug are our heroes. They have ignited courage in our hearts and shown us the beginning of a new era."

Applause burst from the crowd, followed quickly by cheers. Wizards clapped and shouted, and in their faces Roger saw hope burning dangerously close to madness. Old humiliation had found a voice, and now that voice was asking for more.

"We no longer wish to be oppressed," Peter shouted over the noise. "We no longer wish to be forced to hide our magic. Today, we stand together and vow to rebuild the glory of the wizarding world, pass on our magic, and let every wizard proudly display their power."

He raised his wand high. "We will rebuild our world. Expel Muggles from the wizarding world."

"Expel the Muggles! Expel the Muggles!"

The chant rolled through the hall, growing louder with every repetition. Looking at the wizards gradually whipping themselves into frenzy, Roger sighed quietly. This could easily become a red winter.

"Mr. Peter, I hope you have not forgotten the hydrogen bomb in the Arctic Circle," Roger said, stepping forward before the chant could harden into policy.

His warning cut through the excitement like cold water. "If you become too ruthless, your ending may be worse than Grindelwald's."

At the mention of the hydrogen bomb, many wizards gradually sobered. The tragedy of Belobog in the Arctic Circle remained a nightmare hanging over them all, proof that Muggles were not helpless prey when cornered. No wizard, no matter how proud, could survive such destruction.

Peter raised an eyebrow. He had to admit that those weapons were indeed terrifying. Once detonated, no wizard could withstand them, and no one knew exactly how many hydrogen bombs Russia still possessed. More importantly, the wizards had no confidence that they could destroy them all in an instant.

"Young sir, who are you?" Peter quickly hid his unease and turned toward the guest brought by the Smaug brothers.

"Roger Travis, from Britain," Roger said with a smile. "I am here to do some business."

He shook Peter's hand and immediately noticed how smooth and soft it was. This was not the hand of a fighter; it was the hand of someone who preferred speeches, agreements, and other people's blood.

"Travis?" Peter said in surprise. "I thought the British Ministry of Magic had wiped that family out. Chaotic Moscow is not a good place to do business right now."

"No, I do not think so," Roger said, shaking his head. "Land, forests, mines, estates—everything loses its original value in chaos."

He looked up at Peter calmly. "Chaos is the ladder of our progress, Mr. Peter."

"Well." Peter studied the child in front of him for a moment, then nodded slowly. "You are right. Chaos does make us progress."

His gaze sharpened, and this time he looked at Roger not as a child, but as a possible partner. "Mr. Roger, since you understand the danger of hydrogen bombs, do you have any suggestions?"
