Here is the translation of Chapter 55 into English:
55. Internship Pt. 2
The next day of the internship began surprisingly normally.
I woke up before my alarm, just like the previous day, and spent a few seconds silently staring at the ceiling. Yesterday gave me a pretty clear picture of how Hawks operated.
I reached for my phone and checked the time. "Time to get up." I sat up slowly on the bed and stretched. I wasn't tired. Thanks to my abilities, I required very little sleep, and besides, I had long been used to a schedule like this.
I dressed and headed down to the training hall.
When I arrived, Tokoyami was already there. Dark Shadow hovered beside him, swaying from side to side, while Tokoyami tried to prepare for the day ahead.
"Good morning, Tokoyami." Tokoyami turned around. "Good morning, Mephisto." His Dark Shadow gave me a slight bow.
"You're awake awfully early again," Tokoyami noted.
"I don't need as much sleep as others."
Tokoyami merely nodded. It seemed he was starting to get used to things like that with me. A few minutes later, the door slid open. "So, how's my shadow division doing? Ready?" Hawks walked into the hall with a coffee in hand. He was wearing his classic costume and wore the same relaxed expression as yesterday.
"No boring training today." He took a sip of his coffee. "Today, you're coming into the city with me." Hawks put on his sunglasses. "Yesterday you followed me. Today I'll be watching you."
Silence fell for a moment. "What exactly are we supposed to do?" Tokoyami asked. Hawks smirked. "You'll find out outside." A few minutes later, we were already standing on the agency's rooftop. The wind whipped around our costumes as the city stretched out beneath us. From this height, everything looked unnaturally calm.
Hawks spread his large red wings. "So, rule number one." He looked at us. "Don't die." Tokoyami gave him a bewildered look. "That hardly needs saying."
"You never know." Hawks smiled and leapt off the roof. His wings immediately snapped taut, and within seconds, he was several dozen meters ahead of us.
Tokoyami took a breath. "Let's go." Dark Shadow expanded, and Tokoyami used it to propel himself after Hawks.
I simply pushed off the roof as my own wings emerged from my back.
We flew over the city for several minutes. Hawks constantly shifted directions and occasionally accelerated sharply. After a short while, we reached a spot above one of the main thoroughfares. Hawks began to descend slowly. "Alright. Now for something a little different."
He touched down on the roof of a building and pointed down. "What do you see?"
Tokoyami looked down. "Civilians."
Meanwhile, I began scanning the street. People crossed the road, cars drove through the intersection, and several shops were already open. Nothing out of the ordinary. "No immediate danger," I answered.
Hawks nodded. "Correct. Now look closer." I focused my attention on the surroundings. It took only a few seconds to catch a small detail. "The truck driver."
Hawks smirked. "What about him?"
"He's exhausted. He's drifted his eyes off the road several times."
Hawks nodded. "Precisely."
Tokoyami looked in the same direction. "Should we stop him then?"
"No." Hawks stretched. "Not yet. If there's no problem, we don't create a problem."
We watched the street for a moment. The truck eventually turned onto a side street and pulled up to a warehouse.
"And this," Hawks continued, "is precisely why heroes aren't just walking fists."
He looked at us. "Most of the time, you don't need to defeat anyone. You just need to notice the issue before it turns into an actual problem."
I nodded. I actually understood this. Power was simple. Almost anyone with enough of it could use it. But knowing when not to use it—that was something else.
Hawks took to the air once more. "Come on. We have the whole day ahead of us."
The next few hours were surprisingly... ordinary. We helped an elderly woman get her dog out of a small yard because it got stuck between the fence and the gate.
We resolved a minor argument between two people in front of a shop. We assisted the police in tracking down a pickpocket who tried to vanish into the crowd. And once, we even helped a driver whose car broke down in the middle of the road.
None of it was particularly dangerous, which was precisely what surprised me a bit. I had expected an internship under the Number Three Hero to involve much more action.
Hawks naturally noticed. "Bored?" We were walking down the sidewalk back toward the agency.
"No."
"That sounded real convincing."
I looked at him. "I just expected more trouble."
Hawks laughed. "Well, that's hero work for you. One day you're fighting a villain, and the next day you're looking for a lost cat."
Tokoyami chimed in from the other side. "Even so, that kind of work is important."
"Of course." Hawks thrust his hands into his pockets. "People often only remember the huge battles. But to a regular person, someone helping them with something small can be far more meaningful."
I stayed silent for a moment.
He was right. In a world full of people with incredible powers, it was easy to forget the ordinary things. Yet those were what made up most of life. When we returned to the agency, Hawks sent us to the training hall, where we practiced for a while.
By evening, we were sitting in the office. Tokoyami was jotting down notes from the entire day, while I sat by the window watching the city.
"So," Hawks called out from his desk, "another day down."
Tokoyami closed his notebook. "Today I learned more about observation and fieldwork."
"Good." Hawks turned his gaze to me. "And you?"
I paused to reflect. "The Hawks Agency is different than I expected."
"I'll take that as a compliment."
"It's efficient."
"I'll definitely take that as a compliment." I offered a faint smile. "There's a lot of information here. A lot of movement. And a minimum of useless rules."
Hawks smiled with satisfaction. "So, the right choice?"
"Yes."
"Excellent." Hawks leaned back in his chair. "Get some rest, then. Tomorrow we head out again."
Tokoyami nodded. I stood up and headed toward the door.
"Good night."
"Good night, Shadow Monarch."
