Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: The Judas Table

The dining room of the penthouse was bathed in a dim, amber glow that made the expensive crystal glasses shimmer like frozen tears. A bouquet of black calla lilies—Elias's favorite, though I knew they symbolized mourning—sat in the center of the table. I had spent two hours getting ready, choosing a dress of midnight-blue velvet that made me look like the shadows themselves had come to life.

Elias sat at the head of the table, his arm still in a silk sling, looking regal but weary. He kept glancing at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of pride and confusion. He still couldn't understand why I wanted this dinner. He thought I was being a "saint."

"She's here," Marcus announced, his voice a low rumble from the foyer.

Elena Vance walked into the room like she owned the air we breathed. She was wearing a dress of liquid silver, her hair slicked back, her eyes scanning the room for a weakness. When her gaze landed on me, she didn't hide her contempt. She looked at me like I was a fly that had accidentally landed on a masterpiece.

"Elias," she said, ignoring me entirely as she leaned down to kiss his cheek. "You look terrible. Being a hero doesn't suit you."

"Elena. Sit," Elias said, his voice clipped. He gestured to the chair directly across from mine.

"Thank you for coming, Elena," I said, my voice as sweet as poisoned honey. "I felt that after the... excitement at the gala, we should all sit down as adults. After all, if our families are going to be joined by business, we should at least be on speaking terms."

Elena arched a perfectly groomed eyebrow. "Is that what this is? A peace offering? Or are you just marking your territory before the lease runs out?"

I felt Elias stiffen beside me, but I reached out and covered his hand with mine, squeezing gently. "I prefer to think of it as a collaboration. Elias tells me you're the brilliant mind behind the Vance side of the merger. I'd love to hear more about the logistics... especially the 'offshore' structures."

The atmosphere in the room plummeted by ten degrees. Elena's eyes flickered to Elias, then back to me. "Elias, I didn't realize your wife was so interested in the... technicalities."

"Zahra has been helping me with the PR fallout," Elias said, his voice warning Elena to back off. "She has a guest clearance. Nothing more."

"A guest clearance," I repeated with a playful pout. "He's so protective. But sometimes, when he's asleep, I like to browse the logs. It's fascinating, Elena. I saw a series of transfers today... very large ones. Moving from the merger fund into a private account."

I paused, picking up my wine glass and taking a slow, deliberate sip. I watched Elena's face. She was a professional, but I saw the micro-expression—the slight narrowing of her eyes.

"Transfers?" Elias asked, frowning. "Zahra, what are you talking about?"

"Oh, maybe I misread the numbers," I said, waving my hand dismissively. "It was a series of five-million-dollar tranches. They were tagged for 'Silas Thorne's Legal Defense Fund.' I just assumed it was a strategic move you hadn't told me about yet."

The sound of Elias's glass hitting the table was like a gunshot. "What?"

Elena stood up, her face turning a pale, sickly shade of grey. "Silas? Elias, what the hell is she talking about? You told me Silas was finished. If you're funneling our merger capital to your uncle to keep him quiet about the 'Project Phoenix' blueprints, I'll pull my father's support tonight."

"I am NOT funneling money to Silas!" Elias roared, standing up so fast his chair toppled backward. He hissed in pain as his injured shoulder jolted. "Zahra, you must have seen it wrong. Viper would have alerted me."

"But the logs said 'Authorized by E. Thorne,'" I said, my voice trembling with fake fear. I pulled my phone from my clutch—the one the Ghost had modified. "Look... I took a screenshot because I was confused."

I slid the phone across the table. It wasn't a real screenshot of the bank; it was a high-level digital spoof the Ghost had created. It showed a clear trail of money moving from the Vance-Thorne joint account into an offshore shell company owned by Silas.

Elena snatched the phone. Her eyes flew across the screen. "You son of a bitch. You're hedging your bets! You're using my capital to buy off your family so you can cut me out of the Founder's Shares once the kid is born!"

"Elena, listen to me—" Elias reached for her, but she slapped his hand away.

"No! I've spent six months setting this up! I ruined the Al-Fadi family for you! I provided the leverage to get this girl into your bed!" Elena screamed, her mask finally shattering. She gestured wildly at me. "And now you're trying to double-cross me? I'll ruin you, Elias. I'll go to the board tomorrow and tell them the whole marriage is a sham for the inheritance. I'll burn your empire to the ground!"

"Go ahead!" Elias yelled back, his face turning a dark, dangerous red. "You think the board will believe a jilted ex-fiancée? I have the signatures! I have the 'Morality' victory! You're nothing without me, Elena!"

I sat back in my chair, the velvet of my dress feeling warm and comforting. I watched them tear each other apart—the two people who had sat in a room three years ago and decided to destroy my father's life. They were like two rabid dogs fighting over a bone, and they hadn't even noticed that the bone was gone.

"You think I'm just a jilted ex?" Elena hissed, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. She reached into her silver clutch and pulled out a small, black recorder. "I've kept every meeting we ever had, Elias. I have you on tape talking about how 'disposable' Zahra is. I have you laughing about how easy it was to bankrupt her father. If I go down, you're coming with me."

Elias went deathly silent. The rage in his eyes turned into something else—a cold, calculating desperation.

"Give me that recorder, Elena," he said, his voice a low, lethal threat.

"Come and take it, hero," she challenged, backing away toward the door. "But remember... I already uploaded the cloud backup. If I don't check in with my assistant by midnight, the files go to every major news outlet in the country."

She turned and ran out of the room, her silver dress disappearing into the foyer.

Elias didn't chase her. He couldn't. He slumped back into his chair, his face buried in his good hand. The room was deathly quiet, save for the sound of his ragged breathing.

I waited. I let the silence stretch until it was almost unbearable. Then, I stood up and walked over to him. I stood behind him, placing my hands on his shoulders, leaning down until my lips were near his ear.

"It's okay, Elias," I whispered, my voice full of a fake, soothing warmth. "We'll find a way to fix this. We're a team, remember?"

Elias looked up at me, his eyes glassy and broken. He reached up, taking my hand and kissing it with a desperation that made my skin crawl. "I'm sorry you had to hear that, Zahra. She's lying... she's just trying to tear us apart."

"I know," I said, a dark, cold smile touching my lips where he couldn't see it. "But don't worry. I won't let her ruin us. I have a plan."

"What plan?" he asked, looking at me like I was his only lifeline.

"Tonight, Elena is going to her hotel," I said. "She's going to try and leak those files. But before she does, I'm going to go see her. I'll tell her I'm leaving you. I'll tell her I'll testify for her. I'll get that recorder, Elias. For you. For us."

"No, it's too dangerous," he protested, but I could see the hope in his eyes. He was a drowning man, and I was the shark offering him a jagged piece of wood.

"It's the only way," I said. "Trust me, Elias. Have I ever let you down?"

He looked at me, and for the first time in our marriage, there was no calculation in his gaze. There was only pure, unadulterated trust—the kind of trust you only give to the person you think loves you more than life itself.

"Go," he whispered. "Take Marcus. Get that recorder."

"I'll be back soon," I said, kissing his forehead.

I walked out of the penthouse, the midnight-blue velvet of my dress swishing against my legs. I didn't go to see Elena to help Elias. I went to see Elena to finish what I started.

As I stepped into the elevator, I pulled out my own phone and dialed a number.

"Viper? It's Zahra. Elias is compromised. Elena has the tapes. I need you to meet me at the Vance hotel in ten minutes. We're going to 'secure' the cloud backup. Elias's orders."

I hung up, a cold laugh bubbling in my throat. Elias thought I was saving him. Elena thought I was a victim. But by tomorrow morning, they were both going to realize that the "Price of Inheritance" had just been paid in full.

And the only one left standing would be the woman they both thought they could discard.
