Chapter 21 - THE SERFS

Alex said and laughed. "Impossible."

"How will a Serf survive in an human world"

Ariel paced impatiently around Gabrielle's living room, her boots tapping repeatedly against the tiled floor while Alex remained seated on the couch, spinning a small ball of light between his fingers. Gabrielle watched both of them from the dining table, completely lost by the silence that had suddenly filled the house.

"What is it now?" she finally asked.

Neither of them answered immediately.

Alex caught the glowing orb before it disappeared into his palm and looked towards his sister.

"If someone on Earth calls himself Serf..." he began slowly, "...then we have a problem."

Ariel stopped walking.

"A big one."

Gabrielle frowned.

"I thought Serf was just his name."

"It isn't."

Alex leaned forward, resting both elbows on his knees.

"Serif isn't a name."

"It's a title."

Gabrielle looked from one twin to the other so lost.

"What exactly is a Serif?"

Ariel didn't answer.

Instead, she walked towards the front door, picked up her coat from the hanger and slung it over her shoulder.

"I'll be back."

"Where are you going?"

"The Royal Archives."

Before Gabrielle could ask another question, Ariel vanished into thin air, leaving nothing behind except a faint silver glow that disappeared seconds later.

"Just let her have her bossy moment."

Far beyond the human world...the magical realm.

Without slowing down, Ariel crossed the enormous bridge leading toward Queen Neta's palace. The royal guards recognized her immediately and opened the towering silver gates before she even reached them.

"The Archives," Ariel said.

Neither guard asked a question.

One simply pointed towards a long hallway that stretched endlessly beneath the palace.

Eventually she stopped before another pair of gigantic doors carved entirely from white crystal.

They opened by themselves.

Inside...

Thousands of books rested on the shelves, all in categories.

Ariel walked deeper into the library, then to a place where the book of the ancients times are kept – Atijo.

The entrance has a door of gas.

Ariel stood at the entrance of the door..

"I need information about the Serifs."

She moved closer to enter but couldn't pass through.

She sighed.

"I really hate this place."

She folded her arms.

"Fine..."

"I, Ariel of the Royal Guard, request permission to study the Order of the Serifs."

Immediately the entire library trembled, the door hissed and then she passed through.

"Finally." She muttered.

In this part of the library, Atijo, the books floats. A

As she entered, every floating book moved aside.

One enormous book slowly descended from the darkness above.

It landed gently before her.

Across its black cover, there was a silver letters that spelt;

THE ORDER OF THE SERIFS

"Found you." Ariel said with a smirk.

She picked up the book and then walked toward the exit. At the exits, she tried to pass but was unable to.

"You are not allowed to leave with a book." The library (Atijo) echoed.

"You want to mess with me, Atijo?" Ariel yelled. "So you better open this door, now!"

The door hissed.

"I thought as much." Ariel said then passed through.

She walked a bit then disappeared into mid air.

Few seconds later, Serf and his assistant walked in.

"Are you sure someone came in asking for the book on serf?" Serf asked.

She replied with a nod

He walked over to the door of Atijo;

"Give me the name of the person that asked for the book"

Silence

"Are you really trying to protect the person"

Silence filled the air again

"Whatever, I will find the person another way. I know it is one of Neta's people." He said then walked away.

After a while, Ariel appeared again at the same position she left.

She turned towards the door and smiled;

"That's why I love you, you understand loyalty. Thanks babe." She said smiling and then walked out happily.

Meanwhile on Earth, in Gabrielle's house, Alex and Gaby are seated at the dinning table.

Gabrielle eats while Alex watches her.

"So, you had to change parents?"

"It is called a foster home, Alex." Gabrielle said laughing.

"ohh."

"How is your realm?" Gabriel asked then takes a sip.

"Normal. We go to regular school."

"Really? You guys study, philosophy, chemistry, Math…..."

"What is Math?" Alex interrupted Gabrielle.

"A subject kiddo." Gabrielle replied waving the spoon in her hand. "I though you said you went to regular school."

"Yeah, We study history, philosophy, psychology, spells, Management of Magic, and other stuffs."

"How is that regular stuffs?"

"Yes it is ma"

Ariel appears suddenly.

"I got the book." She said waving the book in the air.

"You stole a book from the library?" Alex asked then gasped.

"You are surprised?" Ariel asked raising an eyebrow.

"Na! How did you get it pass Atijo?"

"It is none of your business." She replied then placed the book on the table.

"What book is this?"

"The book of magical beings that exist and those that are extinct. " She said smiling.

"Ohhh open to my page." He said grinning.

They flip through the pages together staring happily, with their smile as wide as the joker.

"Who is a Serf? Who am I? That is the question you are to answer for me.

"Oh really Gabrielle."

Gabrielle stands and then paces.

"You both owe me quite a lot of explanations. What is a veil? why is it so important and My mother is a Queen? I don't know but you guys better explain everything."

"We cant tell you everything neither can we answer your question."

"Why?" She asked.

"We cant?" Ariel asked.

"We can show you. It wont take time."

Ariel placed both hands on the ancient cover.

The pages opened by themselves.

Images appeared instead of ordinary writing.
