Chapter 41: THE HALFLING FAMILIES ARRIVE

Six carts, not two.

Orin's lead cart was visible from the perimeter watch before the gate opened — the same low-slung, wide-wheeled design I remembered from his first visit. But behind him came five more, each loaded with the systematic density that characterized halfling logistics.

Three families. Twelve people. More than I'd expected for a first integration wave.

"The Goodwheats brought seeds," Orin said as his cart passed through the north gate. "Root crops that don't grow in Velen's climate. They've been experimenting with cold-weather varieties for three generations."

The first cart behind him belonged to a family of four — parents and two children, the older one already helping to guide the horses through the gate with practiced efficiency.

"The Burrows family is trade," Orin continued. "Four languages between them. They've been routing through the eastern circuits for twenty years."

A second cart, this one carrying what looked like accounting materials and sample goods arranged with merchant precision.

"The Tannicks are healers. Their eldest has methods Marta hasn't seen — halfling-specific pharmacology combined with human herbalism."

The third cart was smaller, more personal. A family of three, the eldest member already scanning the settlement's medical tent with professional interest.

None of them were performing integration. They were doing the practical work of moving in — unloading carts, asking about water sources, identifying where to stable horses. The best possible version of arrival.

[SCI THRESHOLD — NEW SPECIES INTEGRATION]

[HALFLING (MULTIPLE FAMILIES) — FORMALLY INTEGRATED]

[SCI MULTIPLIER: 1.80x → 1.90x]

[+50 CP EARNED]

[HALFLING PASSIVE: +1 CP PER TRADE EVENT — ACTIVE]

The notification registered as the last cart passed through the gate. Seven species now, counting humans as the baseline. The settlement was becoming something that shouldn't exist — a multi-species community in the heart of Velen, building itself through attraction rather than conquest.

[— BESTIARY VAULT BLUEPRINT: AVAILABLE]

[— WITCHER-STEP: AVAILABLE (COST: 1,000 CP)]

[— RECIPE ARCHIVE TIER III: ACTIVE]

I read the list twice, cataloguing each new function.

The Convergence Hall and Bestiary Vault blueprints I'd expected — the CDM had been hinting at architectural unlocks since Tier II. The Witcher-Step at 1,000 CP I filed for later consideration.

But the unlock I'd been waiting for wasn't in the Tier III functions. It was in the conditions section:

[WITCHER TRIAL IMPROVEMENT FORMULA: CONDITIONS MET]

[PURCHASE AVAILABLE: 500 CP + COOPERATING MAGE REQUIRED]

The Trial Hall. The thing I'd been building toward for eight months.

The conditions were finally met.

Yennefer found me that afternoon, watching the halfling families settle into their new quarters.

"The Convergence Hall blueprint," she said. "What is it for?"

I turned from the window. She was leaning against the doorframe of my quarters, her expression carrying the particular focus that meant she was assembling a larger picture from available pieces.

"Multi-species assembly space. A governance hall designed for communities with diverse physical requirements — different seating heights, different acoustic needs, different environmental preferences."

"A practical solution for a practical problem."

"Yes."

She studied my face. "And the other building you're planning?"

I should have expected her to notice. Yennefer noticed everything.

"There is a second blueprint," I said carefully. "I would like to discuss it with you when you have an hour."

"I have an hour now."

"I know. And the conversation will take longer than you expect." I met her eyes directly. "I would like you to have eaten before we begin."

She was quiet for a moment, processing the unusual framing. "That is a very strange way to ask for a meeting."

"It's an accurate one."

Another pause. Then: "Tomorrow evening."

"Tomorrow evening."

She left without further comment, but I could see her cataloguing the interaction — the specific care I'd taken in framing the request, the implication that the conversation would require preparation.

She was already thinking about it. That was intentional.

In the settlement's only sunny corner, Pip and the Goodwheat family's youngest child were sitting together.

I couldn't hear what they were discussing — their voices were too quiet, their postures too absorbed in whatever shared activity had brought them together. But I could see the quality of the interaction. Two small people in a settlement that had been built around human-scale assumptions, finding each other.

The CDM couldn't measure this. The SCI tracked species integration as a statistical aggregate, not as individual connections forming between people who had been alone.

But this — Pip's cautious engagement, the halfling child's open curiosity — was what made the arithmetic worth calculating.

The numbers were a tool. The relationships were the point.

I returned to my quarters to prepare for tomorrow's meeting.
