Kael's POV.
Ravenna covered for me. She told my people that the assassin was the reason for the humans finding out about the gates. She didn't have to but I could only remember her promise when she first tried to rescue me by herself.
She swore it was her obligation to rescue me. And I messed up the chance before I got to save her life. Guilt gnawed at me now, sharper than any wound they'd carved into my flesh, a reminder that my failure had nearly cost her everything.
"Things are going to change once we are out of here, right?" The man continued talking. "Nobody should have to be subjected to this torture,"
I wasn't in a condition to assure him, but I had my responsibilities as Alpha. I kept Ravenna company, I kept her strong. It was going to be tougher without Elara, but the man needed a rock more than ever. I forced steadiness into my voice, refusing to let the weight of losing her bleed into the fragile hope this stranger still clung to.
