The handmaiden lowered her head. "Yes," she said grimly. "I have been useless!"

"Mother, let me try." A black, devouring power welled up in Lex Cross's hand as he reached for Rosalind Bloom's wrist.
When Rosalind Bloom saw the black energy appear in Lex's hand, her eyes filled with not only shock but also boundless joy. "Lex, you've awakened a second superpower? The Devouring System?"
"Yes, Mother. Now let me remove the poison for you!"
As Lex spoke, he once again reached for Rosalind Bloom's wrist, but she swatted his hand away in a panic. "No! Lex, anyone can help me, but not you! You absolutely cannot be the one to remove this poison!"
"Why?"
"Let me ask you, does anyone else know you've awakened a second superpower?"
