'And besides, all I did was favor Jane Jacobs a little over Evelyn Grant! What is Ryan Sterling doing? He's trying to steal his own brother's wife!'
"Only Ms. Shea is in the dark! Besides her, who doesn't know you dragged Evelyn Grant to court and demanded the death penalty?"
"I was just trying to get to the truth!"
"You just didn't trust Evelyn Grant."
"…"
Ryan Sterling knew his older brother was the type who cared about his pride above all else. Since this whole affair had gotten out of hand, he had to find an excuse—one that could even fool himself, that would cover up all his mistakes or shift the blame onto someone else.
'In any case, it could never be his fault.'
"If Jane Jacobs were still alive, would you still want to get back together with Evelyn Grant?"
Julian Sterling's expression darkened. "I want to get back together with her because I don't want to make Mom and Dad worry! They're getting old, and they shouldn't have to stress over my problems."
