Chapter 461 - The Shadow of Rhodes Island: 05 Familiarity

Over the following days, Nameless gradually came to understand the civilization and culture of Terra, as well as the role Rhodes Island played within it.

Aside from the information Kal'tsit had provided, he also gathered knowledge from other sources.

For example, physical books, storybooks, and even the online platforms within Rhodes Island itself.

The former contained information similar to what Kal'tsit had already given him. If anything, Kal'tsit's materials were even more detailed.

But the latter...

The latter forced Nameless to reevaluate his impression of Rhodes Island as an organization.

All he could say was that Rhodes Island's operators were extremely serious when necessary, but when they were not, they could leave others genuinely questioning what kind of people they really were.

Aside from trying to understand this land and Rhodes Island itself, Nameless also kept himself busy by acting as Amiya's bodyguard.

Just as he had observed that day, Amiya and even some of Rhodes Island's higher-ups had become targets.

However, the primary targets remained Amiya and Kal'tsit.

The exact reason was unclear, but based on the information he had gathered, it was likely related to Rhodes Island's predecessor: Babel.

This Babel was not the Babel he knew.

Here, Babel had once been an organization in a place called Kazdel that combined education, medicine, politics, and military power into one entity.

That organization had only recently collapsed and was now being rebuilt with the landship Rhodes Island as its base.

Many of Rhodes Island's current operators had originally come from Babel. Of course, there were also people who had joined Rhodes Island after cooperating with them during various operations.

There were even cases like Warfarin, who had been dragged aboard because of special circumstances.

However, those were rare, and Kal'tsit personally handled such individuals.

The latter group posed the least danger. Whenever Kal'tsit recruited these special talents, she thoroughly investigated their backgrounds beforehand.

The real problem lay with the first two groups.

Even though there were people specifically assigned to handle such issues, some individuals hid themselves far too deeply.

A few days earlier, Nameless had caught one himself.

The Sarkaz had only just begun reaching for a weapon before Nameless forcibly dispelled his spirit form and subdued him directly.

Neither the Sarkaz's combat skill nor physical abilities could compare to Nameless, a Servant. Before Amiya, the person walking ahead, even realized something was wrong, the Sarkaz had already been dragged into a nearby empty room and handed over to Ascalon.

Those people belonged to Rhodes Island's specialized department for handling such matters: S.W.E.E.P.

Originally, someone else had been responsible for protecting Amiya, but because of Nameless's appearance, Ascalon had personally taken over the task.

In her eyes, Nameless was extremely dangerous.

If Kal'tsit and Amiya had not both chosen to trust him, she would never have merely monitored him. She would have tried to remove him from Rhodes Island.

In a certain sense, Nameless's personality was far worse than that of most Sarkaz, and his danger level was extraordinarily high as well.

Allowing such an unpredictable factor to remain aboard Rhodes Island was like installing a massive Originium explosive on the landship, one that could detonate at any moment without warning.

However, after several days of interaction, Rhodes Island, S.W.E.E.P, and Nameless gradually developed a strange sort of mutual understanding.

The first two parties treated Nameless far more favorably than they had in the beginning.

Naturally, all of this was thanks to Amiya's efforts.

Recently, she had gone through considerable trouble trying to persuade Kal'tsit and Rhodes Island's elite operators.

"..."

Nameless naturally noticed Amiya's efforts.

At this moment, he sat at a desk with a pen in hand, watching Amiya resting beside him after falling asleep from exhaustion.

This young Master possessed an overwhelming amount of goodwill toward others.

Even toward someone like him, she still chose to show kindness.

Though he was not particularly used to it, Nameless had no intention of stopping her.

Perhaps it was strange coming from him, but the kindness Amiya possessed was an exceptionally precious trait.

Perhaps it was precisely because of that quality that Amiya had become Rhodes Island's leader and earned the recognition of operators far older than herself.

Since Amiya carried such a heavy burden upon her shoulders, then as her Servant, he naturally had to hold himself to a higher standard as well.

It was not because he expected anything from her.

Rather, he had simply changed the way he viewed her identity, from a child accidentally dragged into a Holy Grail War to a Master who, despite having certain flaws was still trustworthy enough.

The "certain flaws" naturally referred to her shortcomings in magecraft.

Fortunately, as Archer, he did not particularly require cooperation from his Master. Combined with the fact that he possessed some magical energy reserves himself, this issue could be ignored for the time being.

As for the remaining issue, it was that the current Amiya possessed very little actual authority.

For many matters, she still needed to consult Kal'tsit or the other operators before taking action.

As a result, Nameless's range of activity became somewhat restricted.

However, since his current focus was on gathering information, the limitation was not particularly noticeable yet.

At the end of the day, as a Servant, he was merely an attachment to his Master, Amiya. Unless special circumstances arose, he would not stray too far from her.

Especially now, when it was still uncertain whether other Servants existed, and Amiya's current situation was far from ideal.

She had already been targeted by others, and now she also carried the responsibility of being a Master.

It could only be said that far too much had already been placed upon those small shoulders.

Although Nameless thought highly of Amiya and understood her current predicament, unfortunately, aside from killing people, there was very little he could do to help her.

As for his experience?

First of all, his memories were incomplete. He retained only most of the basic knowledge. Furthermore, Terra already possessed its own unique civilization and development. Bringing out what he knew might only confuse Amiya instead.

Secondly, as he had said earlier, the only thing he truly excelled at was killing.

And that was something he had no intention of teaching Amiya.

That path did not suit her, and Nameless did not wish for her to walk it either.

Clearly, the direction Rhodes Island currently adhered to was much better. And from the investigations he had conducted over the past few days, Rhodes Island was not an organization that conducted inhumane experiments under the guise of medical treatment.

Although he still held some doubts regarding certain operators, he himself was not such a rigid person, so he simply ignored it.

Rhodes Island's successful operation was not solely due to the doctors in the Medical Department. The efforts of its operators also played an indispensable role.

After sorting through the thoughts in his mind and recording selected portions into a black notebook, Nameless finally closed it and put it away.

What was recorded within were mostly important pieces of information, along with some of his own thoughts and observations.

It could not be helped.

Even ordinary people could not always perfectly remember important information. To avoid mistakes in understanding or judgment, writing things down was the safest choice.

At least, that was true for him.

To avoid wasting unnecessary time and effort recollecting the same information later, Nameless specifically made concise notes regarding Terra and Rhodes Island within the notebook.

As for why he had later begun paying special attention to Amiya...

Even he himself did not know.

He simply found himself unconsciously paying attention to her.

Perhaps it was because she was his Master.

Perhaps it was because Amiya had shown him goodwill from beginning to end.

Or perhaps Amiya's situation gave him a strange sense of familiarity.

But that was as far as it went.

He possessed no memories of the past, so naturally he could not understand why Amiya's circumstances gave rise to such a peculiar feeling of familiarity.

"Amiya, break time is over."

Putting aside his doubts, Nameless glanced at the clock. After confirming that it had reached the time Amiya had mentioned earlier, he called out to wake her.

He said nothing else.

He merely called her name.

"Mmm... alright..."

Upon hearing Nameless's voice, Amiya, who had been sleeping on the desk, first twitched her rabbit ears before slowly sitting upright.

The red marks left on her face from sleeping against the table, along with her sleepy eyes, would probably have made most people too softhearted to stop her from resting a little longer.

Unfortunately for Amiya, the person beside her was Nameless.

He was not that merciful.

This time, he was no longer writing notes or a journal.

Instead, he was seriously reviewing combat records on the terminal, studying the battle methods used by the people of this land.

Although Originium Arts and magecraft were quite similar, there were still fundamental differences between them.

Most forms of magecraft were created for the sake of research. People like him, who used it purely for combat, were actually the minority.

Originium Arts, however, were different.

As long as one possessed a staff or became Infected, they could generally cast Arts. While some casters did conduct deeper research into them, such individuals were only a minority compared to those who merely treated Originium Arts as tools.

Nameless, however, did not care about such distinctions.

He only needed to understand the attack patterns of most Arts.

"Phew... thank you, Mr. Nameless."

Turning her head and seeing Nameless busy with his own work, she had no intention of disturbing him. After thanking him softly, she reopened the book in front of her and continued reading.

After several days together, Amiya and Nameless had gradually developed a certain level of understanding between them.

Although he looked fierce and his words were often sharp, Nameless was actually a very easy person to get along with.

At least, from her perspective.

Most people struggled to interact with him. Unless work or special circumstances required it, they generally forced themselves to speak with him only when necessary.

Among the people Amiya knew, only elite operators such as Kal'tsit, Ace, and Scout seemed capable of speaking to him with calm expressions or even cheerful smiles.

Aside from Kal'tsit, who had always been like that, most elite operators were probably more accepting because they had previously worked alongside Sarkaz mercenaries with similar or even worse personalities.

Even so, Nameless still had not integrated himself among the others.

The reason was that he neither smoked nor drank, had little interest in most things, and spent most of his time either in spirit form following her around or staying in the office reading books and documents.

He showed absolutely no intention of interacting with others.

After all, even the cold-looking Dr. Kal'tsit would occasionally listen to Closure's terrible jokes whenever she happened to be in a good mood.

Still, Amiya had no intention of forcing him to change.

At the very least, Nameless's harsh remarks always stopped before crossing the line, so incidents like fights or brawls never occurred.

...Or perhaps people wanted to start something, only to be forced back by his gaze?

The moment that possibility entered her mind, Amiya immediately raised her book to cover her face and cautiously peeked toward Nameless.

"You are distracted."

Sensing her gaze, Nameless spoke without even lifting his head.

This was far from the first time Amiya had looked at him like that.

Most of the time, she was either curious about what he was doing or simply curious about him as a person.

Especially after learning that Servants were beings summoned only after death, her curiosity toward him had grown even stronger.

A child being curious was perfectly normal.

But losing focus when it was time to be serious was unacceptable.

Still, Amiya was usually quite diligent.

Right now, she was probably just not fully awake yet.

"Oh, right... okay…ehwu!"

After being called out, Amiya panicked slightly. The book in her hands slipped from her grasp and slammed directly onto the desk with a loud sound, startling even herself and causing her to let out a strange noise.

Fortunately, there was nobody else in the office besides her and Nameless, so no one else was disturbed.

Realizing what had just happened, Amiya quickly straightened the book in front of her and began reading seriously, pretending that nothing had happened at all.

If her face had not been so red, and if her ears had not been twitching back and forth so frequently and dramatically, perhaps the act would have looked rather convincing.

"..."

Nameless noticed all of it, but he did not point it out.

Instead, he simply turned slightly and faced away from Amiya, continuing his own work.

"Ugh..."

Seeing his reaction, Amiya understood that he was intentionally giving her a moment to calm down and some personal space.

In that regard, he was surprisingly considerate.

But embarrassment was still embarrassment.

At that moment, Amiya wished she could go back a few minutes and stop herself from having those strange thoughts in the first place. Then none of this would have happened.

Unfortunately, that was impossible, so she could only force herself to accept reality.

About ten minutes later, Amiya had more or less accepted what happened and finally entered a proper working state, seriously reading the book before her.

"...Heh."

Naturally, Nameless, who was sitting with his back toward her, could hear the small noises she made out of embarrassment. Though she had tried to suppress them, they were still perfectly clear to him.

This was probably what people called the ostrich mentality.

However, the reason he chuckled was not because he found it amusing.

Rather, he noticed that Amiya handled the adjustment of her own emotions quite well.

Though it seemed like a trivial matter from his perspective, from a child's point of view, it was probably a "major incident."

Whether it was her response, her handling of the situation, or the way she adjusted herself afterward, Amiya behaved far more maturely than a child normally would.

But that so-called maturity existed only because she had been forced to grow up.

The price of growth... huh?

Heh.

At that thought, Nameless merely let out a faint scoff.

"Mmm... I should ask Mr. Logos about this Arts-related question later."

Amiya did not hear Nameless's scoff. She remained focused on reading the book before her. Whenever she encountered something she did not understand, she marked it down so she could ask others about it later.

Meanwhile, after hearing Amiya muttering to herself, Nameless restrained his wandering thoughts and refocused on the combat records.

There was no need to concern himself with the pasts of others.

After all... his own past was hardly anything worth mentioning either.
