CHAPTER 49

ALDRA VOSS

January 23rd

She appeared at the third Track seminar of the semester.

Track seminars in Year 1 Semester 2 were structured differently from the first term — less exploratory, more focused on independent research presentations. The horseshoe formation was the same. The twenty-two remaining students in the program occupied their habitual positions. Mira at the far left. Kael centered in the Track cluster. Aren midway right.

The new face sat at the open end of the horseshoe, where visiting faculty typically sat. She was in her late twenties, with close-cropped hair and a flat legal pad on the table in front of her. She had not introduced herself. The seminar coordinator had not introduced her. She was simply present in the way that people who understood institutional spaces were present — completely unremarkable until you noticed her.

He noticed her at the eleven-minute mark.

Not because she moved. Because she didn't. The room had the particular motion of students who were watching each other as much as the presenter — small adjustments, phone checks, whispered margin notes. She held completely still. That kind of stillness was either disinterest or attention at a depth that had nothing to spare for management.

He activated Profile Deconstruction at the thirty-minute mark, during the Q&A when attention was distributed and his own focus would not be visible.

PROFILE DECONSTRUCTION — TARGET: UNKNOWN FEMALE, LATE 20S

DOMAIN: ANALYTICAL. POSTURE: OBSERVER (NOT PARTICIPANT). AFFECT: GENUINELY NEUTRAL — NOT PERFORMED.

SURFACE READ: RESEARCH ORIENTATION. INSTITUTIONAL FLUENCY. NOT A STUDENT.

DEEPER: MOTIVATION — INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY. PRIMARY SUBJECT OF INTEREST IN THIS ROOM: AREN VALE.

NOTE: SHE ARRIVED KNOWING YOUR NAME.

He did not change his expression.

After the seminar ended, she made no move to introduce herself. She closed the legal pad, capped her pen, and left through the north exit. He watched her without appearing to watch her.

Word Knowledge: no institutional affiliation visible on any badge. Clothing: no university lanyard. Shoes: practical, expensive — the kind worn by people who walked considerable distances between appointments.

He asked Kael afterward, as casually as the question could be asked: "Did you recognize the observer?"

Kael glanced toward the north exit. "No institutional badge. Not faculty." A pause that had something careful in it. "Not standard either."

That was the most Kael would say. Aren noted it.

He found out her name three days later.

AION: [CROSS-REFERENCE — TRACK SEMINAR VISITOR LOG — JAN 23: ALDRA VOSS. LISTED AS 'INDEPENDENT RESEARCH AFFILIATE.' NO INSTITUTIONAL HOME. PRIOR RECORD: 4 YEARS LATTICE RESEARCH DIVISION — DEPARTED 18 MONTHS AGO. CURRENT STATUS: PRIVATE CONSULTING.]

He sat with that for a while.

Four years in the Lattice Research Division — not the fellowship recruitment arm, not the institutional relations arm. Research. The people who studied things, not managed them. And she had left eighteen months ago.

The Lattice had been sending recruiters. Then enforcement. Then forged documents through legal proxies.

Now they had sent someone who had left.

That was a different kind of message. Not a threat. Not an offer. Something closer to a question.

He wrote in his notebook: Aldra Voss — Lattice Research (former). Arrived knowing my name. Purpose: to understand, not to recruit. The Lattice has stopped sending people to manage me. They have sent someone to study me.

Below that: This is either the most sophisticated approach yet, or it's genuine.

Below that: Both possibilities require the same response.

He would wait. He would let her come to him when she was ready. And when she did, he would answer only what revealed nothing — and watch what she did with the answers that revealed nothing.
