CHAPTER 47
THE DRAFT
January 11th
Dr. Yuen's office on Floor 14 was the same as it had always been — two stacks of paper that hadn't moved since September, a whiteboard with six lines of notation that had been there since October, and a window that faced the campus's older buildings and let in gray January light.
Dr. Vasant was already there when Aren arrived at 1:57 PM. He was a compact man in his mid-fifties with a habit of marking printouts in three colors simultaneously and an expression that suggested he found most conversations slightly less interesting than they might have been. He had proposed the companion paper in December and Yuen had agreed in forty seconds. He had been corresponding with Aren by email since.
"Sit," Yuen said.
Aren sat. Vasant handed him a printout — 34 pages, annotated in blue, red, and green.
"Red is structural," Vasant said. "Blue is argumentation. Green is language."
"How much red?"
"Four comments." A pause that managed to convey that four was either very few or very many depending on who was counting. "Section three has a framing problem. You've stated the information asymmetry finding as a result when it should be stated as a constraint. A result can be disputed. A constraint can only be falsified. The paper is more defensible the second way."
Aren read the section. Vasant was right.
"How long to revise section three?"
Yuen looked at him. "Tonight?"
"Tonight."
Vasant uncapped the green pen. "I'll mark the language notes while you read. Yuen, your methodology appendix still has the original sampling window in table four."
"I know."
"It contradicts section two."
"I know that too." She pulled a folder from beneath the nearest paper stack. "New table four."
Vasant received it without expression, compared it to the printout, and nodded once.
The review ran until 4:40 PM. By the end, Aren had seven pages of handwritten revisions, Vasant had color-annotated both copies of the draft, and Yuen had rewritten her introduction paragraph four times on the whiteboard until the fifth version was the one she wanted.
"Journal target?" Aren asked.
Yuen and Vasant exchanged a look. "There are three journals that publish work at this intersection," Vasant said. "One of them has a known Lattice advisory relationship on its editorial board."
"Then not that one."
"Agreed. That leaves two. The Review of Financial Systems is slower — eight to twelve weeks to first decision. The Journal of Institutional Economics is faster, more selective, and publishes commentary pieces alongside primary research, which means our paper arrives with context rather than standing alone."
Aren thought about this. Standing alone was a vulnerability. Arriving with context was not.
"Journal of Institutional Economics," he said.
Vasant made a note. "I'll prepare the submission package. We'll need your co-author biography, a 200-word abstract, and the revised draft by Friday."
Aren nodded.
He returned to the apartment at 5:20, made food, and then sat at his desk and rewrote section three in two hours and fourteen minutes using Superbrain at controlled intensity — INT 285, CL cost 2.4 CL/minute, enough to accelerate without consuming the evening's capacity.
The revision was cleaner than the original. He sent it to Vasant at 7:48 PM with a note: "Section three revised. Let me know if there's red remaining."
Vasant replied at 9:02 PM: "No red. Two green."
Aren made the two language adjustments and went to bed.
He was up at 4:00 AM.
The Foundation Protocol had not changed since August. It would not change until the Stage required it.
