Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: The Gilded Cage

The sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Valerius villa felt like a mockery. Kaida walked down the grand staircase, the heels of her boots clicking sharply against the white marble. She was headed for the breakfast conservatory, her mind already on her first lecture at the university.

Her father, Lorenzo, sat at the head of the mahogany table, hidden behind a newspaper and a cup of espresso.

"Morning, Papà," Kaida said, reaching for a piece of toast.

"Good morning, cara," Lorenzo replied, folding his paper. His face was unusually serious. "I've made a change to your security detail. Leo is being reassigned. From today, he will be working exclusively with your brother at the firm's headquarters."

Kaida froze, the toast halfway to her mouth. "What? No. You can't do that."

"It's done, Kaida. The threats against this family are evolving. Your brother needs someone he trusts, and you... you need someone more capable."

"Leo has been with me since I was five years old!" Kaida's voice rose, her eyes stinging with a sudden flash of hurt. Leo wasn't just a guard; he was the man who had taught her how to ride a bike when her father was too busy with court cases. He was family. "I don't want someone 'capable.' I want Leo!"

"Enough," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into that cold, lawyer-tone that usually ended arguments. "I am not listening to this. You are my only daughter, and I will not risk your life because of sentimentality. Your new lead guard is already here."

The Entrance of the King

The heavy oak doors of the dining room swung open.

The air in the room seemed to vanish. Jax walked in, and for a moment, even the birds outside seemed to stop singing. He was a mountain of masculine perfection, dressed in a bespoke black suit that hugged his broad shoulders and narrow waist. His eyes were hidden behind dark, polarized glasses, making him look like a lethal statue come to life.

He didn't walk; he prowled.

"Signor Valerius," Jax said, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that made the silver on the table hum. He gave a sharp, professional nod to Lorenzo before turning his head toward Kaida.

"Kaida," her father said, "this is Jax Rossi. He is your new lead bodyguard. He will be with you twenty-four hours a day. No exceptions."

Kaida stared at him, her anger bubbling into a hot, itchy restless feeling. He looked too perfect. Too elegant. He didn't look like a bodyguard; he looked like a man who gave orders, not someone who took them.

Jax's Dark Monologue

Jax stood perfectly still, his expression a mask of cold professionalism. But behind those black glasses, his eyes were devouring her.

He watched the way her chest rose and fell with her angry breaths. He saw the fire in her amber eyes and the way she gripped the edge of the table.

Cry for your old guard if you want, Princess, Jax thought, a dark, hidden thrill running through his veins. But Leo was a dog on a leash. I am the wolf that just took over the forest. From this second on, you belong to me. Only me. No more boys at college, no more wandering eyes. I'll burn this city down before I let another man touch what is mine.

A tiny, almost invisible cold smirk twitched at the corner of his mouth.

The Silent War

"I won't make this easy for you, Mr. Rossi," Kaida snapped, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the floor. She stepped toward him, looking up into those dark lenses. She was five-foot-five, and he towered over her, but she didn't flinch.

"I've fired three guards this year," she lied, her voice dripping with venom. "You'll be gone by the end of the week. I'm the boss here, not you. And I will get Leo back."

Jax didn't move. He didn't even blink. He slowly reached up and slid his glasses down his nose just enough for her to see his eyes—eyes that looked like a stormy sea, deep and dangerous.

"You can try, Princess," he whispered, his voice for her ears only. "But I don't get fired. I get results."

He stepped back and opened the door, gesturing for her to leave. "The car is waiting. We're going to be late for your 9 AM."

Kaida stormed past him, her shoulder intentionally brushing his. She was already planning. She would make his life a living hell. She would lead him on wild chases, ignore his rules, and do whatever it took to break him.

She thought she was the one in control. She didn't realize she was walking straight into a trap designed by a man who had never lost a game in his life.
