Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 — “Binding Complete”

Kai barely caught his breath. The shadow collapsed behind him, writhing into nothingness, but the shards… the shards had been different this time.

"Host detected. Candidate locked."

Kai's arm trembled. A shard—the one the System had just called "not yours… yet"—hovered inches from his palm. It glowed, pulse syncing with his heartbeat.

A voice, sharper this time:

"This host will be permanently bound. Confirm or reject."

Kai's mind screamed. Reject? Rejecting the System after what it just did would be… suicide. But accepting? That meant the unknown—letting this thing inside him completely.

He glanced at the girl, still cowering behind rubble. She didn't speak, but her wide, fearful eyes asked the question for him: Do you have the strength to protect her?

Decision locked: Kai clenched the shard.

"Confirm."

The shard plunged into his chest, and the world exploded in light. Pain like molten metal coursed through him, but he held on.

Then came the System's cold whisper:

"Binding complete. Host Level: 1. Core functions unlocked: Combat Interface, Shard Manipulation, Survival Instinct Boost."

Kai stumbled back. His arms tingled. Reflexes sharper, body moving before thought. He looked at the girl—she blinked, unsure whether to fear him or run.

"Who… what are you?" she stammered.

Kai's voice was low, calm, slightly sarcastic despite the chaos:"I'm your new nightmare… if I say yes, you live."

The System chimed in, almost gleeful:

"First permanent bond established. Mission: Survive. Quests will now escalate."

Kai swallowed. The shadows around the ruined city shifted. A low rumble echoed—something bigger than the previous monster was coming.

System alert:"Incoming threat detected: Level 2. Host must prepare."

Kai's hands still glowed faintly from the shard's pulse. His chest ached, but his mind sharpened. Every instinct screamed strategy. Every nerve burned with possibility.

He glanced at the girl again. For the first time, he felt it—not fear. Responsibility.

And then the System whispered, chilling and precise:

"Host, this is only the beginning. Someone else is watching. Choose carefully next time."

Kai's jaw tightened. He didn't know who, or why, but he knew one thing for certain: survival was a game—and the game had just started.
