Synopsis
Asahi Mochizuki enters U.A. High School with everything a hero needs: a mastered Quirk that bends the fundamental forces of attraction and repulsion, a strategic mind that processes a battlefield the way most people process a chessboard, and a confidence so complete it reads, to most people, as arrogance. He is not wrong about his abilities. He is wrong about what they are for. MHA: Attract & Repel follows Asahi across the full sweep of the My Hero Academia canon — from the chaos of the U.A. entrance exams to the fire of the Final War — as the world systematically dismantles his central belief: that excellence is the same as worth, and that being very good at heroics is the same as being a good hero. The story is built on four collisions. The first is with his own limits — a Nomu that doesn't care how talented he is, a license exam that fails him not for lacking ability but for lacking presence, a collateral damage incident that no amount of skill can undo. The second is with the people who refuse to keep their distance: Momo Yaoyorozu, his oldest friend and most honest critic; Kirishima, Mina, Sero, and the rest of Class 1-A, who form a found family around a man who didn't ask for one and doesn't know what to do with it. The third is with Mei Hatsume — the one person whose single-minded obsession with creation mirrors his own, whose love language is a perfectly engineered support grenade, and who falls asleep at her workbench every night without knowing she has become the center of his gravity. The fourth, and final, is with All For One: a villain whose argument about power, ownership, and purpose is coherent enough to demand a real answer rather than a fist. The answer Asahi builds — across 135 chapters of action, training arcs, quiet workshops, long chess matches, and one war that reshapes the hero world — is not ideological. It is specific. It is the people in the room. It is the workshop at midnight. It is a promise made in two words that he keeps. This is a slow burn in every sense. The romance earns its resolution. Chapter 1 - Entrance

The written exam started at eight.

Asahi Mochizuki arrived at seven forty-three, found his assigned seat in the third row of Hall B, and spent the remaining seventeen minutes doing nothing in particular. He did not review notes. He had no notes to review. He sat with his hands flat on the desk and watched the room fill.

The hall was large enough to swallow sound. Two hundred and six applicants, by his count — he'd stopped at the door and let the density of bodies tell him the rough figure before he crossed the threshold. The chairs scraped. Someone's pencil case clattered to the floor two rows back. The smell was institutional: floor wax and collective anxiety, the latter being the more pungent of the two.

He catalogued without trying to. It was simply what his mind did when given a room.

The girl three seats to his left had been here since seven fifteen — the desk surface in front of her was clear, but the tension in her shoulders was the posture of someone who had spent the last half-hour running mental flashcards. Dedicated. Probably thorough. The kind of thorough that gets a person to ninety points and makes them believe they need ninety-two.

The boy directly ahead was large, broad-shouldered, with a hardening quirk he wasn't quite suppressing — the skin along his forearms kept cycling, stone-grey patches flickering in and out like a nervous tic. He wasn't nervous about the test. He was nervous about something else. The way his eyes moved to the door every forty seconds told Asahi that someone he knew was supposed to be here and wasn't.

Asahi's gaze moved on.

The exam proctor entered at seven fifty-nine and a half, and the hall went quiet the way halls do when an authority walks in with the particular posture of someone who has done this exact thing four hundred times and has no patience for the performative version of silence — he wanted the real thing.

He got it.

Asahi picked up his pencil.

The questions were not difficult. This was not a surprise; the difficulty of a U.A. written exam was well-documented, and "well-documented" in the context of Japan's most prestigious hero course meant a ceiling adjusted for the approximate eighty-fourth percentile of a nation of quirk-users, which was still a ceiling Asahi reached without effort. He moved through the paper in order, which was his only concession to convention — he could have jumped to the end and worked backward, but linearity imposed a kind of discipline that he found useful. It kept him from being bored.

He finished in forty-one minutes.

The exam was ninety minutes long.

He put down his pencil, turned it ninety degrees so it was perpendicular to the paper's edge, and spent the remaining time doing what he had been doing since he arrived: watching.

That was when he noticed the green-haired boy.

He was three rows ahead and two seats left, and he was muttering. Not whispering — not audible to anyone without focus, but Asahi had learned early that his attention, when pointed at something, had a sharpness to it that most people's didn't. The boy's lips moved in a continuous, low stream, and his pencil was moving too, but not across the answer sheet. He was annotating the margins. Little diagrams. Arrows. What looked like force diagrams.

For a written hero exam.

Asahi watched him for approximately ninety seconds before he had categorized what he was seeing. The boy was not anxious. He was thinking. The muttering was processing, not panic — the pencil's rhythm was too purposeful, the diagrams too structured. Whatever he was working through, he was genuinely working it through, not performing the shape of effort.

Strange. Interesting in a limited way. The dedication was real. The method was catastrophically inefficient.

The boy paused, tilted his head slightly to the left — a gesture Asahi recognized as the physical expression of a new angle of approach — and then wrote something decisive in the bottom corner of his test paper. He read it back. He underlined it.

Then he turned around.

Not all the way — just enough that the profile was visible. Unremarkable face. Freckles. Eyes that were bright in the specific way of someone whose primary characteristic is not confidence but investment. He was invested in the exam the way a much older person might be invested in something that had taken them years to get to.

Asahi looked away first, because he had seen enough to form a hypothesis and the hypothesis wasn't interesting enough to test further. The boy would likely score well. His method was strange. His passion was genuine in a way that was almost embarrassing to observe.

He filed the data. He would revise it if new information emerged.

It did not occur to him, in any of the ways that matter, that he had just stored the wrong hypothesis.

The other one was harder to miss.

The blond boy had been radiating irritation since he sat down. This was not a metaphor — Asahi could see the faint crackle along his palms from twelve feet away, the barest expression of a quirk held in check by someone who considered self-restraint an insult to their own power. He finished the exam in under thirty minutes and spent the remaining time with his arms crossed and his jaw set in a particular angle that communicated, without ambiguity, that the room was beneath him.

Asahi found this mildly interesting in the same way he found a well-forged blade interesting: the material was clearly exceptional, and the edge was currently pointed at everything in reach.

At one point the blond's eyes moved across the room in a proprietary sweep, checking who was in his space, and they passed over Asahi and then came back. Asahi met them without urgency.

Something in the blond's expression shifted — not much. A sharpening. The slight recalculation of someone who has just realized a room contains a variable they hadn't accounted for.

Asahi returned to his perpendicular pencil.

He was not interested in the blond's assessment of him. He was mildly interested in what the assessment told him about the blond: that he read rooms the same way Asahi did, and that he didn't like what he'd just read.

That would bear watching.

At nine thirty, the proctor called time.

Asahi placed his pencil down, gathered his answer sheet, and reflected, briefly and without drama, that he had probably scored a perfect hundred. This was not arrogance. It was probability. He had missed no questions he was aware of, and he was, as a rule, aware of the ones he had missed. The instances in which he was wrong about that were rare enough to have been memorable, and he remembered all of them.

He stood, straightened his blazer — light gray, the good kind of wool, because his mother had insisted and his father had agreed that a person who dressed with precision communicated something useful about their relationship to standards — and joined the shuffle toward the exit.

The green-haired boy was ahead of him in the corridor. He was still muttering. He had his notebook open and was writing in it as he walked, which should have been impractical but wasn't, because his feet were navigating the crowd on some lower-order processing track while the rest of his attention stayed with the page.

Asahi watched him for exactly as long as it took to exit the building.

Functional, he thought. Strange. Probably useful in the right context.

He adjusted his watch — Patek Philippe, his father's graduation gift to him, the weight of it a familiar anchor on his wrist — and turned toward the campus gates.

Tomorrow was the practical.

He had work to do.

In the third-floor office of the faculty building, a man with disheveled hair and a sleeping bag tucked under one arm looked at the preliminary written exam results and was quiet for a moment.

He found the perfect score. He looked at the name.

He looked at it for a while.

"Hm," said Shota Aizawa, and did not elaborate.
