Chapter 339: Thanos, Philosopher-King of the Universe
"Ethan, what is it? Is he really here?" Strange asked, urgency creeping into his voice, his gaze following Ethan's fixed stare up toward the sky.
Ethan's eyes were steady and calm, not a flicker of fear on his face — but the tension radiating off him was enough on its own to warn every Avenger present that something was coming.
At Strange's question, the Avengers snapped into motion immediately.
They moved fast and clean, lifting the still-kneeling Banner up onto a couch, making sure he was safe.
Then they formed a ring, bracing themselves, eyes locked on whatever direction Ethan was staring toward.
Every face in that circle carried the same grim resolve. They all understood — this fight would be harder than anything they'd faced before.
"So it's finally happening," Steve said, standing among the group, a hard, determined light in his eyes. Last time, against Thanos, they'd lost. They'd lost friends. Comrades. This time, he wasn't going to let that happen again — no matter how impossibly strong this enemy was.
He clenched his fists in silence, hunger for victory burning through him.
The next instant, two missiles tore out of the sky, and a violent explosion detonated right beside the Avengers.
It leveled the entire Avengers compound in an instant.
The ground itself shook violently.
Ethan, moving without hesitation, opened the Mirror Dimension alongside Strange and pulled every Avenger inside it, sparing them all from the blast.
"Come and get it, Thanos — I've been waiting for you," Thor snarled, teeth gritted, staring up at the massive warship hanging in the sky.
He recognized it instantly. There was no mistaking it — that ship was the very one that had wiped him out once already.
And his brother Loki had died aboard that same ship, because of that ship's owner. Because of that man, Thor had gone from King of Asgard to a king with no kingdom left to rule.
More than half his people, wiped out by Thanos. All he was now was a king without subjects.
Staring up at the enemy before him, rage burned white-hot inside Thor's chest. He'd already killed one version of Thanos. But this one — somehow, this one made him even angrier, even more unwilling to let it slide.
He raised Stormbreaker and let out a furious roar, and a bolt of lightning crashed down onto him instantly.
As the lightning struck, golden battle armor materialized over his body. He was ready for the fight ahead.
Ethan looked over the assembled Avengers and could see it — they were ready.
He gave a slight nod and opened a passage out of the Mirror Dimension. A flash of light later—
Every Avenger was released back into the world.
They stood together on the ruins, facing down the massive warship overhead and the enemy about to arrive.
Right then, a huge beam of blue light lanced down from the ship above.
As the beam faded, a figure appeared on the battlefield, fully armored — Thanos.
He wore his helmet, a massive sword gripped in one hand.
He looked over the assembled Avengers with a cold, dismissive gaze, contempt written plainly across his face.
He ignored the Avengers entirely, instead glancing around at his surroundings, murmuring to himself. "So this is the future, then?"
Inside, Thanos felt a genuine conflict, sharply at odds with the blank expression on his face.
On one hand, he was pleased — his future self had finally realized a goal he'd chased for years, collecting all six Infinity Stones and wiping out half the universe's population, restoring balance to existence.
On the other hand, none of it had been embraced by the people it was meant to save. If anything, they'd come to hate him for it — not that Thanos particularly cared whether anyone understood him or not.
But these people — the very ones his mercy had spared — hadn't been content to simply go on living. Instead, they'd descended into madness, resorting to time travel itself in a desperate attempt to undo his work and bring back the dead.
He realized, now, that he'd been far too merciful.
So this time, he'd decided on something more extreme. If they refused to accept it with dignity, then Thanos would grant them dignity by force.
He settled himself atop a massive slab of rubble, his gaze deep and unreadable, watching as Marvel's own trinity approached — Iron Man Tony, Thor the God of Thunder, and Captain America Steve.
A bitter, mocking half-smile crossed his face, as if amused by their sheer stubbornness.
"You refuse to accept your defeat. And yet, here you are — forced to face me all the same."
"I believed," Thanos continued, looking over the assembled heroes, "that once half of all life was gone, the other half would go on to flourish." He paused. "But you've proven to me that isn't true at all."
The three of them stood silent, keeping a wary distance around Thanos, braced for a sudden attack.
Their eyes carried nothing but resolve and defiance, as if to say: We will not give up. We will fight to the very last moment.
"So long as anyone still clings to the past," Thanos said, his voice low and heavy with something almost philosophical, "they will never accept the future. They will always resist it."
Strange, standing at the very back of the group, leaned in and muttered quietly to Ethan. "I hate to say it, but — this Thanos guy's actually kind of a philosopher. If he'd been born on Earth, he might've made a decent living as one."
Strange had, in truth, been more or less dragged here bodily by Ethan. Given the choice, he'd have much preferred to stay put, quietly hiding out inside the Mirror Dimension.
Tony finally spoke up, addressing Thanos directly. "That's right. We're exactly that stubborn."
At Tony's response, Thanos lifted his head, his voice dropping cold and low. "Then I thank you. Because now, I know exactly what needs to be done." With that, he rose to his feet, and an overwhelming aura of power radiated out from him, as though it might swallow the entire universe whole.
"I am going to turn this universe to dust." Thanos's voice sank lower still. "And then — with the very Stones you helped me find — I will build an entirely new universe. One free of suffering. Free of hatred. Free of war. A universe of nothing but gratitude and peace."
He set his helmet in place, a mad gleam flickering behind his eyes.
By this point, every Avenger present understood exactly what was coming — there was no mistaking his intent to strike.
"A universe built on that much spilled blood?" someone muttered.
Thanos's gaze drifted, then, to the very back of the group.
"I don't need any of you to understand me. Not them, either. But you — you'll understand, won't you? Ethan. Visitor from another universe."
