Chapter 9 - Episode 9

The air screamed.

The beast, now a mountain of twisted muscle and crimson light, let out a roar that shook the very leaves from the trees. It moved with a speed that defied its size—a blurring shadow of death.

CRASH!

Alhen barely rolled away as a massive claw pulverized the earth where he had stood. His silver Essence flickered, straining against the oppressive weight of the creature's new power.

"Alhen!" Lira shouted, her voice nearly lost in the chaos.

He didn't answer. He couldn't. Every ounce of his concentration was focused on the flow of energy within him. The river was no longer calm—it was a storm.

Faster. I have to be faster.

The beast lunged again. This time, Alhen didn't dodge. He stepped into the strike, his glowing blade meeting the creature's obsidian claws.

CLANG!

The shockwave blew the mist back. Alhen's feet dug deep into the dirt, but he didn't break. His Essence flared, turning from a soft mist into a sharp, brilliant silver flame that wrapped around his sword.

"This is it!" he roared.

With a surge of strength he didn't know he possessed, he parried the claw upward, exposing the beast's chest. He vanished—a streak of silver light—and reappeared behind the creature.

SHINK.

A single, horizontal line of light hung in the air for a heartbeat.

The beast froze. The crimson marks on its skin faded, turning to ash. With a final, hollow groan, the massive creature collapsed, its body dissolving into dark mist before it even hit the ground.

Silence returned to the forest.

Alhen stood panting, his sword tip resting on the soil. His Essence slowly receded, leaving him cold and trembling with exhaustion. He looked toward the trees, toward the spot where the mysterious figure had been.

The figure was still there.

Hidden in the deep shadows, the stranger stared at Alhen. Even from a distance, the gaze was piercing—fierce, calculating, and filled with a dark promise. For a long moment, their eyes locked. Then, without a word, the figure stepped back into the darkness and vanished as if he had never been there at all.

"...Who was that?" Alhen whispered, his voice cracking.

"I don't know," Lira said, stepping cautiously toward him. She looked at the spot where the beast had died, then at Alhen. Her expression was no longer just curious—it was filled with a new kind of respect. "But you just did the impossible."

The rest of the journey was a blur of tired horses and hushed whispers.

By the time the sun began to set on the second day, the forest opened up to reveal a sprawling estate. High stone walls, manicured gardens, and a mansion that looked more like a fortress of white marble.

The Valencrest Manor.

The gates creaked open. Guards in polished silver armor stood at attention as Lira led Alhen through the grand entrance. Inside, the ceilings were so high they reminded Alhen of the library, but instead of the scent of old paper, the air smelled of expensive incense and cold stone.

Lira stopped in front of a set of massive oak doors. She turned to Alhen, her face pale.

"Remember what I told you," she whispered. "Be careful."

The doors swung open.

At the far end of the room, sitting behind a desk of dark wood, was a man who seemed to radiate authority. He was older, with sharp features and hair the color of steel. His eyes, cold and grey, looked up from a map and settled directly on Alhen.

Baron Kaelen Valencrest.

The silence in the room was absolute. The Baron didn't move for a long time, simply measuring the boy who stood before him—the traveler who had awakened Essence in his woods.

Finally, the Baron spoke. His voice was like grinding stone.

"Lira, leave us."

Lira hesitated, glancing at Alhen, then bowed and retreated. The heavy doors clicked shut, leaving Alhen alone with the most powerful man he had ever met.

The Baron stood up, walking slowly around the desk until he was only a few feet away.

"I heard what happened in the forest," the Baron said, his gaze never wavering. "A boy from a nameless village, wielding power that takes knights decades to master."

He leaned in slightly, his presence heavy and suffocating.

"Tell me, Alhen... who are you, really?"

Alhen met the man's gaze, his hand tightening on the strap of his bag. The journey had only just begun, and already, he was standing in the center of a storm.

"We have a lot to talk about."
