Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Knock at Midnight

Aarav had stopped believing in miracles the day Meera disappeared.

Three years ago, on a stormy night, she had vanished without a goodbye, without a letter, without even a trace. The whole town of Chandipur whispered stories—some said she had run away, some said her family had taken her far away, and some said darker things no one dared say loudly.

But Aarav never stopped waiting.

Every night, he sat on the old wooden bench outside his tea stall near the railway crossing, watching the road that led to the river bridge. It was the same road where he had last seen Meera in her blue dress, hair soaked in rain, tears in her eyes.

And then, one midnight, someone knocked.

The sound was soft. Three slow knocks.

Aarav frowned. No one came to the tea stall that late.

He opened the door.

And there she was.

Meera.

Standing barefoot in the rain, wearing a pale white salwar, her long hair dripping, her face paler than moonlight.

Aarav's breath stopped.

"Meera...?"

She looked at him with the same deep eyes he had memorized years ago.

"I came back," she whispered.

His hands trembled. "Where were you? I searched everywhere—"

"Don't ask me tonight," she said quickly. "Please. Just... let me stay."

Aarav stared at her, torn between disbelief and joy. Every question in his heart burned, but the fear in her eyes silenced him.

He stepped aside.

Meera entered the stall and sat near the old stove. Her hands were freezing.

Aarav wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.

"You're shaking."

She forced a weak smile. "I'm not scared of the cold."

"Then what are you scared of?"

She looked toward the window.

"Midnight."

Aarav followed her gaze.

Outside, through the rain, a shadow stood near the railway gate.

Tall. Still. Watching.

When Aarav blinked, it was gone.

He turned back to Meera, but she was crying.

"Aarav," she whispered, "if anyone asks... tell them I was never here."
