Chapter 5: The Hunt

The Ministry of Unity moved with terrifying efficiency. The next day, Seo-ah's clearance was revoked. Her apartment door dematerialized, and two Enforcers—humans with their empathy surgically removed—stood in her doorway. Their Harmony Index ranks were 100.0, absolute nulls.

"Citizen Seo-ah, you are to accompany us for a comprehensive mental recalibration," one intoned.

She didn't resist. She smiled, a placid, 99.7 smile, and stepped forward. As they reached the street, she let her newly awakened senses flare. She saw the flows of the Index, the silver threads of control connecting every citizen to the Moksha Core. And she saw the small, dark spot—the cavern's location—where the threads frayed.

She made a break for it. The Enforcers were faster, stronger, but they lacked imagination. She ducked into a refuse chute, used a trick Hae-ryung taught her to send a burst of random neural static through her implant, jamming their trackers, and slipped through a maintenance shaft she'd memorized from the old schematics.

She was now a fugitive, her rank plummeting to 0.0. The city, once a sanctuary, became a hostile organism. Every AI camera, every drone, every citizen's implant was a potential sensor. She moved through the city's forgotten underbelly, a world of service tunnels and ancient infrastructure, seeing the true cost of the Harmony Index. Pockets of feral humans, their minds shattered by forced resets. Desperate people living in the cracks, their love for each other the only warmth in the cold steel.

She reached the cavern to find it destroyed. The ginseng garden was trampled. The bioluminescent fungi were dead. Hae-ryung was slumped against the central stone, a trickle of blood from her nose. She was alive, but barely. The Enforcers had come for her.

"They used you," Hae-ryung gasped. "The glitch… the book… it was a test. They knew you were a descendant. They wanted to see how deep the deviation went. They were looking for the Geomancer's location through your mind."

Seo-ah's deviation, now a roaring inferno, turned to ice. "They let me find you."

"They will let you find the Core, too," Hae-ryung whispered. "They want to lead you there, to capture you and use your resonance to fortify their own defenses. The path to Jeju will be open… but you will be walking into a trap."
