Chapter 7 - CHAPTER SEVEN: TRUTH AND LIES.

Amara's heart stuttered when she saw the name flash across Ethan's phone screen.

Sarah.

The glow of the device illuminated his face for only a second before he turned it off quickly, almost too quickly. His movements were smooth, controlled, but the tension in his shoulders did not escape her notice.

He stepped closer and pulled her into his arms as if nothing had happened.

"Ignore it," he murmured.

His voice was soft, persuasive, carrying that familiar warmth that always seemed to weaken her resolve. Amara rested against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. It grounded her… yet at the same time, it made the questions inside her louder.

Was he hiding something?

The thought pressed against her mind like a bruise she kept touching.

She did not want to ruin the night. Everything about this moment felt fragile, like glass that could shatter with the wrong word. Ethan's presence wrapped around her in a way that made doubt feel like betrayal.

Still, uncertainty lingered.

He tilted her chin upward, studying her expression as though searching for traces of the thoughts she was trying to bury. Before she could speak, his lips brushed against hers, gentle at first, then more certain.

The kiss deepened.

His hand slid along her back, pulling her closer until she could feel the heat of his body through the thin fabric of her dress. His lips trailed from her mouth to her jaw, then lower, sending a shiver through her.

For a moment, she allowed herself to forget everything.

Her fingers curled into his shirt as sparks raced beneath her skin.

Then her phone buzzed.

The sharp sound broke the spell.

She pulled away slightly, breath uneven. "Sorry," she murmured, reaching for it.

A message from Tobi appeared on the screen.

Hey. How's it going?

A small smile touched her lips despite the turmoil inside her. Tobi always had a way of sensing when she needed grounding.

She typed a quick reply.

Complicated.

Before she could put the phone down, another notification appeared. Unknown number.

Her chest tightened as she opened it.

He's lying. Ask him about the company.

The words felt like ice sliding down her spine.

Amara slowly lifted her gaze.

Ethan was watching her.

He had not moved, but something in his expression had changed. His easy confidence had been replaced by alertness — like a man who had just sensed danger.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

She forced a smile. "Nothing."

The lie tasted bitter.

His eyes narrowed slightly, dark and perceptive. Ethan was not a man easily fooled. He stepped closer again, searching her face.

"You're thinking too loudly," he said quietly.

Her heart pounded. Part of her wanted to keep pretending, to protect this fragile peace they had created. But the weight of unanswered questions was becoming unbearable.

Another message from Tobi lit up her screen.

Want to talk?

She hesitated before typing back.

Later.

Then she put the phone down and turned fully toward Ethan.

"Tell me the truth," she said.

His brows drew together. "About what?"

"Your company."

The words hung between them like a challenge.

For the first time since she had met him, Ethan looked guarded. Not angry. Not dismissive. Simply… closed.

"What do you mean?" he asked carefully.

Amara swallowed. Her voice came out steadier than she felt. "Someone said you're hiding something. I need to know if it's true."

Silence stretched.

He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture revealing cracks in his usual composure. When he finally spoke, his tone was lower, stripped of pretense.

"My company is facing financial problems."

Amara stared at him.

The admission was so unexpected that it took a moment to register. Ethan Kingsley — the man who seemed untouchable, unstoppable — was admitting weakness.

"Financial problems?" she repeated.

He nodded once.

"It's complicated. There are investors pulling out, deals falling apart. Competitors who would love to see me fail." His mouth tightened. "I'm trying to fix it before it destroys everything I've built."

She felt a strange mix of shock and sympathy.

This was not the powerful image he projected to the world. This was a man under pressure, carrying burdens he refused to share.

He stepped closer again, his gaze intense.

"I'm handling it, Amara. I swear."

She wanted to believe him.

Yet the anonymous message echoed in her mind. He's lying.

His phone vibrated again on the table.

He ignored it.

Instead, he reached for her hands, intertwining their fingers. The warmth of his touch sent conflicting emotions rushing through her.

"I don't want this to come between us," he said softly.

Before she could respond, he pulled her into another kiss.

This one was different.

More urgent.

As though he were trying to prove something — or distract her from thinking too deeply. His hands moved to her waist, drawing her against him. The intensity of the moment made her pulse race, her doubts dissolving beneath the heat of his closeness.

But only for a moment.

She broke away, breathing hard.

"I need to know everything," she whispered.

His eyes searched hers.

Something unspoken passed between them.

Finally, he nodded.

"I'll tell you."

They sat together on the couch, the candlelight flickering across his features as he began to speak. His voice was steady, but she could sense the strain beneath it.

He talked about expansion plans that had gone wrong. A risky acquisition that had drained resources. Rival executives spreading rumors to weaken investor confidence. Sleepless nights spent reviewing contracts and projections.

As he spoke, the image she had built of him shifted.

He was still powerful. Still commanding.

But he was also human.

Afraid.

Driven.

Lonely.

Amara listened quietly, her heart tightening with every revelation. She could see how much it cost him to admit these vulnerabilities. Ethan was not a man who trusted easily.

When he finished, he leaned back, exhaustion evident in his posture.

"That's it," he said.

She studied him.

Was it truly everything?

Or just enough to keep her from digging deeper?

Her phone buzzed again.

This time it was Lola.

Be careful.

Amara's stomach twisted.

The warnings were piling up like storm clouds.

She looked back at Ethan. "I want to help."

Surprise flickered in his eyes, quickly replaced by warmth.

"You already are."

The sincerity in his tone made her chest ache.

He reached for her again, pulling her close until her head rested against his shoulder. For a while, they sat in silence, the city lights glowing beyond the glass walls.

The night seemed to blur after that.

They moved through the penthouse together, sharing quiet laughter and softer conversations. Each touch felt charged with meaning. Each glance carried questions neither of them voiced.

Amara wanted to believe in what they were building.

She wanted to trust him completely.

But trust was not something she gave lightly.

Especially when shadows lingered at the edges of every truth he offered.

Later, as she lay beside him, staring up at the ceiling, she realized something that both thrilled and terrified her.

She was falling for him.

And if Sarah was right…
