Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Aftermath

The room didn't reset after Kael's turn.

It held.

No one moved right away.

The space still felt… off. Like something had been disturbed and hadn't fully settled back into place.

Kael lowered his hand slowly, the faint tension in the air fading just enough to breathe normally again.

No one spoke.

That part stood out more than anything.

It was Leon who broke the silence.

"…is that normal?"

The question sounded simple.

But it wasn't.

Halven didn't answer immediately. His gaze remained fixed on the center of the room—on the space Kael had just affected—before finally shifting.

"…no."

That was enough.

Rook let out a short breath through his nose, shaking his head slightly. "Yeah, no kidding."

But he didn't sound amused anymore.

His earlier confidence had dulled—not gone, just… pulled back.

Instinct, not fear.

Elira hadn't moved.

Her hand was still pressed lightly against her chest, her expression tight like she couldn't quite steady her breathing.

"…it felt like something pushed back," she said quietly.

No one asked her to explain.

She didn't seem like she could.

Sylven stepped forward, just slightly, his eyes still fixed on the center.

"…it didn't behave like the rest of us."

That was as far as he went.

No theories. No breakdown.

Just observation.

Kain said nothing.

But his stance had shifted—not obvious unless you were looking for it.

He wasn't relaxed anymore.

Mira was still smiling.

Faint.

Unreadable.

Halven finally moved.

"Evaluation complete."

Just like that.

No discussion.

No explanation.

"Leon Ardent."

Leon straightened slightly.

"You will proceed to advanced assessment."

A pause.

"Effective immediately."

The phrasing was precise.

Deliberate.

Leon nodded once.

"…understood."

No hesitation.

No questions.

Kael noticed that.

Not the obedience.

The lack of reaction.

"Elira Vayne. You will be transferred to Cathedral oversight."

Elira blinked. "Cathedral…?"

"You will be briefed."

Same answer.

Same tone.

She hesitated for a second—

Then nodded.

"Sylven Raith. Research Division will oversee your development."

Sylven's expression didn't change much, but there was a flicker of interest.

"…that works."

"Kain Drazel. You will be assigned to combat specialization."

Kain gave a short nod.

No more.

"Rook Valen. Field integration."

Rook grinned faintly again.

"…finally."

"Mira Solenne."

A pause.

"…observation status."

Mira tilted her head slightly.

"…expected."

And then—

Silence again.

Because there was only one left.

Halven didn't rush this part.

His gaze shifted slowly to Kael.

Measured.

Careful.

"Kael Veyron."

No title.

Still.

"You will not be integrated at this time."

There it was.

Clear.

Rook frowned. "Wait—what?"

No one answered him.

Kael didn't react immediately.

"…meaning?"

Halven met his gaze evenly.

"You will remain under observation until further determination is made."

Not training.

Not assignment.

Observation.

"…so I just sit somewhere while the rest of them move on?" Kael asked.

"Correct."

Blunt.

Rook clicked his tongue. "That's stupid. He's one of us, isn't he?"

"No," Halven said.

The word landed heavier than anything else so far.

"…he is an anomaly."

Silence.

This time, it didn't feel neutral.

Leon stepped forward slightly.

"…with all due respect," he said, measured, "he was summoned with us."

Halven didn't look at him.

"He was included," he corrected.

A small difference.

But not really.

Leon's expression tightened slightly.

"…that doesn't change the fact that he's here."

For a moment, it almost sounded like he was pushing back.

Then—

He stopped.

A pause.

"…we need all available strength."

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

That wasn't concern.

That was… calculation.

Halven finally looked at Leon.

"…and that is why we will proceed carefully."

Leon didn't argue further.

"…understood."

Just like that.

Kael let out a quiet breath.

"…right."

That answered that.

Elira glanced toward him again.

"…are you okay?"

The question was soft.

Genuine.

Kael shrugged slightly.

"Depends on your definition."

She hesitated.

Then nodded, like she didn't know what else to say.

Sylven, on the other hand, stepped a little closer.

"…does it always do that?"

Kael looked at him.

"…I don't even know what 'that' is yet."

"…fair," Sylven said.

But he didn't step back.

Kain finally spoke.

"…you didn't control it."

Not a question.

"No," Kael said.

A pause.

"…but you tried."

Kael didn't answer that.

Rook crossed his arms. "Still doesn't sit right with me."

Mira spoke quietly.

"It won't."

Everyone looked at her.

"It gets worse from here."

No one laughed.

Halven turned.

"That will be all."

The guards moved immediately.

This time, the separation was clearer.

The six were guided toward the main exit.

Together.

Kael wasn't.

A different path.

Again.

As he turned, Leon glanced back.

Just briefly.

"…we'll figure this out," he said.

It sounded reassuring.

But something about it felt…

off.

Kael gave a small nod anyway.

"Sure."

Leon held his gaze for a second longer—

Then turned away.

And didn't look back again.

The door closed between them.

The corridor on Kael's side felt narrower than before.

Quieter.

The guards didn't speak.

Didn't need to.

Kael walked in silence, hands in his pockets, gaze unfocused.

"…anomaly," he muttered.

The word didn't feel wrong.

Just accurate.

They stopped at another door.

Different from before.

Heavier.

It opened slowly.

Inside—

Not empty.

Instruments.

Devices.

People.

Watching.

Kael stepped in.

And this time—

The door didn't just close.

It locked.

From the outside.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then—

[Warning: Authority Conflict Detected]

Kael smiled slightly.

"…yeah."

"I think I'm starting to get that."
