Chapter 56 - Shadows and Sweetness

The campus awoke with its usual energy—the hum of students, the distant honking of cars, and the soft shuffle of feet across cobblestone paths. Mau, however, had already been up for hours, reviewing notes for her upcoming lecture and preparing for the latest round of M Designs updates. Her mind moved like clockwork—fast, precise, unstoppable.

Tim met her at the quad, coffee in hand, his casual grin a contrast to her quiet intensity.

"You're early," Mau said, raising a brow.

"I'm predictable," he said lightly, offering the cup. "And apparently, you like predictable."

She accepted it with a small smile, brushing her fingers over his briefly.

"Coffee's hot," he murmured, leaning closer. "But not as hot as you."

Mau laughed softly, a blush brushing her cheeks. "You say that every morning."

"Every morning," he confirmed, letting their hands brush together again.

Meanwhile, Lira was already in motion. Her plan was subtle, almost invisible. Small miscommunications in M Designs updates, slightly delayed emails, a misfiled document here, a misdirected intern there. Nothing that would make Mau falter completely—just enough to create tiny moments of doubt, hesitation, or distraction.

Lira watched it all from the shadows, her heart racing not from malice, but from longing and envy. She wanted Mau's attention, Mau's space, Mau herself—but not with Tim. Not yet. And if small cracks could form, if small disruptions could make Mau stumble, maybe—just maybe—Lira could reclaim a piece of her world.

In the medical lab, Mau moved with her signature precision. Instruments clicked into place, monitors displayed vital statistics, and she coordinated every step flawlessly. Even the tiny disruptions Lira had planted didn't phase her; they barely slowed her rhythm. But Tim noticed the subtle glances, the fraction of a pause when a file opened wrong or an instrument tray was misplaced.

"You okay?" he asked softly during a brief break.

"I'm fine," Mau replied, though the corner of her mouth twitched into a faint smirk. "Just challenges. Keeps me sharp."

Tim grinned, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "You're unstoppable. And you know it."

"I know," she said simply, leaning closer. "And I like having someone who notices."

The afternoon brought a rare reprieve. The two wandered through the campus gardens, their hands intertwined. Tim teased her about her obsession with lists, her perfectionism, and her ability to dominate both the medical and design worlds simultaneously. Mau laughed at his jokes, occasionally nudging him, or stealing a kiss when he wasn't paying attention.

"Do you ever stop thinking?" he asked, wrapping an arm around her shoulder as they sat beneath a tree.

"Not really," she admitted, leaning into him. "But I stop enough to enjoy this."

Tim smiled, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. "I like this version of you. The one who lets me in."

"And I like you," Mau whispered. "Even when you make terrible jokes."

"Terrible?" he gasped dramatically. "I think my humor is elite-level, like your medical skills."

Mau laughed again, brushing her lips lightly against his in a playful, fleeting kiss.

But shadows never slept.

From a corner near the library, Lira observed them. The sight of their laughter, their subtle touches, their stolen kisses—it was like a spark in her chest, igniting feelings she didn't want to admit. She wanted Mau to herself. No Tim, no distractions, no romantic entanglements. Just the girl from the village she had once known.

The jealousy was sharp, immediate, and undeniable.

Her fingers tightened on her notebook. "Just a little disruption," she whispered to herself. "Nothing permanent. Nothing anyone can trace. Just enough to make her pause."

Back in the lab, Mau returned to her simulations, fully in her element. Instruments aligned. Patients "treated" under precise protocols. Judges and professors watched in awe as she moved from task to task, her efficiency unmatched. Even Lira's planted errors—misfiled documents, minor software delays—were absorbed with grace and brilliance.

She paused only once, a flicker of a frown, corrected the issue, and moved on.

The crowd didn't notice. The judges applauded. Mau's reputation soared higher than ever.

Later, as the sun dipped low, casting long shadows across the campus, Tim and Mau found a quiet spot on a rooftop. The city spread below them, lights flickering like distant stars.

"You're incredible," Tim murmured, holding her hand tightly. "Not just here, in your work—but… you. All of you."

Mau leaned her forehead against his shoulder. "And you're ridiculous," she said softly. "But in the best way."

He laughed quietly. "I'll take that."

For a long moment, they sat together in silence, hands entwined, hearts aligned. A soft kiss, quick and sweet, sealed the unspoken promises between them.

But in the shadows, Lira planned the next move. Not loud. Not visible. Subtle, patient, and deliberate. Her first seeds had not broken Mau, not yet. But they had begun to test the edges, to create small moments of tension, to challenge the smoothness of her perfect control.

And somewhere, the whisper of betrayal began to grow, threading its way into the daily rhythm of M Designs and the campus contests.

Love had grown. Strength had grown. But envy—and subtle sabotage—was already breathing just behind them, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
