Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Secret They Kept

Amara sat alone in her room, the envelope with her father's will lying on the desk like a cruel reminder of everything she had lost. She stared at it for what felt like hours, her mind spinning with disbelief and anger.

Her father, the man she had loved and trusted, had left everything to her brother Damien. Not because he deserved it, she thought bitterly—but because her family had always favored him, and now it was official.

She clenched her fists, nails digging into her palms. The unfairness of it all burned hotter than any grief she had felt at his passing. She had hoped for guidance, a fair share, a gesture of love—but the will had shattered that hope.

A soft creak from the study made her turn. She hadn't noticed before, but one of the drawers—the one near the corner—was slightly open. Curiosity pried at her caution.

Moving quietly, she approached it and gently pulled it open. Inside, she found an assortment of letters, faded photographs, and a small leather-bound journal. Her father's handwriting filled the pages with meticulous care, chronicling decisions, worries, and hints of family secrets she had never known.

Flipping through the journal, Amara paused at a page that made her heart skip.

"Damien has the charm to manipulate, but he doesn't understand the stakes. Amara… she must be protected until the timing is right."

Her eyes widened. Protected? Then why had her father left her almost nothing? Why reward Damien while leaving her with scraps?

Questions tumbled over each other in her mind. Was this a cruel oversight—or something far more deliberate?

A knock on her door startled her.

"Amara? Are you alright?" Her mother's voice trembled softly.

"I'm fine," Amara said, forcing calm. "I just… need a moment."

Her mother hesitated but eventually left. Amara closed the drawer carefully and sank into the chair, the journal open on her lap. She needed answers. She needed to understand what had really happened behind the polished smiles and family dinners.

Hours passed as she read. Letters hinted at hidden debts, disputes with distant relatives, and business dealings that had gone wrong. More than once, her father mentioned Damien—but always with caution, as if he feared what her brother might do if left unchecked.

Amara's heart ached at the thought. She had trusted her family, believed in their love and loyalty—but now, everything seemed like a fragile façade.

A sudden thought struck her. Maybe her father's decision was more than favoritism. Maybe Damien had manipulated him. Maybe her inheritance had been stolen long before the will was signed.

The room grew darker as night settled outside. Shadows stretched across the walls, and Amara felt the first spark of determination. Not revenge—yet—but a promise to herself that she would not remain powerless.

She stared at her reflection in the window. The girl looking back at her was scared, yes—but she was also thinking. Calculating. Learning.

Tomorrow, she decided, she would start piecing together the truth. She would uncover the cracks in her family's perfect image and find out what had really happened.

For now, she would watch. She would listen. She would wait.

And when the time came… she would act.

But that time wasn't now.

Not yet.
