Chapter 8 - Chp 8: Is This Really A Mission?

I woke up early, stretching my legs.

Today wasn't just any day.

It was our first mission as genin.

Shisui and I had been waiting for this.

I ran outside, nearly tripping over my own feet in excitement. Shisui was already there, watching me with a small, knowing smile.

"Ready, Shinji?" he asked.

"Of course," I said, clenching my fists. "This is what being a shinobi is all about."

Might Guy leapt into the air with his usual flair.

"YOUTHFUL SPIRIT! TODAY, WE SHOW THE WORLD THE POWER OF OUR YOUTH!"

Shikaku-sensei stood off to the side, arms crossed, quietly observing.

"You three," he said calmly, "today's mission is simple. A D-rank assignment. Capture the target and report back. Remember teamwork and control. Nothing more."

I blinked. "That's it?"

Guy grinned. "PERFECT! FUN AND ENERGETIC! NO LIFE-THREATENING DANGERS!"

Shisui raised an eyebrow. "Simple doesn't mean unimportant. Stay focused."

The briefing was short.

Tora a cat had been causing minor chaos around the village. Knocking over stalls. Stealing food. Hiding in high places.

Our task: capture Tora safely and return him.

"We've trained for bigger things," I whispered to Shisui as we moved out.

"Every mission matters," he replied quietly. "Don't underestimate it."

Guy, meanwhile, was already bouncing ahead of us.

"ADVENTURE AWAITS! COME, FEROCIOUS BEAST OF YOUTH!"

"I don't think the cat sees it that way," I muttered.

Tora darted across rooftops with impressive speed.

I kept him in sight while Shisui tracked his movements with calm precision. Guy charged ahead, vaulting fences and shouting encouragement at the cat.

Shisui sighed. "Focus on the objective."

Tora leapt into a tree. I reached for him and got swiped by tiny claws.

"Hey easy!"

Before Tora could escape again, Shisui used a brief genjutsu. The cat froze just long enough for me to grab him.

"Got him," Shisui said calmly.

Guy whooped.

"THE YOUTHFUL SPIRIT PREVAILS!"

We returned Tora to the shopkeepers. They thanked us profusely.

I was sweaty, tired… and felt a little ridiculous.

But it felt good.

Afterward, we met Team Minato for a brief debriefing.

Minato smiled warmly. "Good work. Even small missions teach important lessons observation, timing, teamwork."

"Yes, sensei," I said, trying not to show how exhausted I was.

Shisui bowed slightly. "We understand."

Guy grinned. "FUN! YOUTHFUL MISSIONS ARE THE BEST!"

Kakashi chuckled quietly. Rin smiled. Obito waved enthusiastically.

"That cat was fast," Obito said. "You guys were impressive!"

"Impressive?" I replied dryly. "It barely touched us."

Obito laughed. "Hey, teamwork counts!"

I shrugged. Shisui shot me an amused glance.

That afternoon, as we walked back toward the Uchiha compound, Father called out.

"Shinji. Walk with me."

I followed, matching his steady pace. Shisui hung back, respectful but listening.

"You handled the mission well," Fugaku said. "But I hear you spend much time with shinobi outside the clan."

"They're my friends," I replied. "And good shinobi. That's why I train with them."

Silence stretched between us.

"You are stubborn," he said at last. "Just like your mother. Perhaps like me."

He exhaled slowly.

"The world is not black and white. Power without loyalty is dangerous. Remember that."

Shisui placed a quiet hand on my shoulder.

"I won't forget," I said. "But I won't turn my back on what's right."

Fugaku said nothing more.

The following days were filled with training, simulations, and new jutsu.

Shisui and I coordinated almost without speaking. Guy was chaotic but relentless, forcing us to react faster every day.

Even Shikaku couldn't fully hide his smirk.

Midweek, a C-rank mission came in.

A thief near the outskirts. Not dangerous but real consequences.

We moved carefully. Shisui suggested stealth. Guy wanted to charge.

I compromised.

The thief ran.

Shisui trapped him with genjutsu. I blocked the escape route. Guy celebrated loudly.

Mission complete.

Back at the compound, Father waited.

"You show no hesitation helping those outside the clan," he said. "Do you understand the danger of that mindset?"

"Yes," I replied. "But strength is meaningless if I don't protect everyone."

Fugaku's hand tightened briefly.

"Not everyone will understand you," he warned. "Loyalties will be tested."

Shisui nodded. "We're prepared."

I met my father's gaze.

"Being Uchiha shouldn't mean protecting only ourselves."

His expression was unreadable.

"Perhaps," he said quietly. "We shall see."

By week's end, Shikaku nodded approvingly.

"You've shown promise beyond your years."

Guy threw his fist into the air.

"YES! THE POWER OF YOUTHFUL ENERGY!"

I laughed, leaning against Shisui.

"The next mission will be harder."

Shisui smirked.

"Then we train harder. Together."
