Chapter 79 - Chapter 76: The First Key

The hospital room was quiet.

Rain tapped gently against the window.

Machines hummed softly in the background.

Twelve-year-old Maya sat beside another child's bed, holding his hand.

The boy was frightened.

His surgery would begin in an hour.

His parents had stepped outside to speak with the doctors.

He tried not to cry.

Maya smiled.

"It's okay."

The boy looked at her with watery eyes.

"How do you know?"

"Because I was scared too."

She rolled up her sleeve, revealing the faded scars from countless needles.

"I've been here a long time."

The boy managed a weak smile.

"Does it get easier?"

Maya thought for a moment.

"No."

The boy's face fell.

Then she squeezed his hand.

"But you get stronger."

The boy laughed quietly.

"So... that's better?"

"I think so."

Far beyond Earth...

The crimson Scout changed direction again.

Its speed increased.

The Hunter watched it in horror.

"It locked onto her."

Echo turned toward Noah.

"Who is she?"

Noah's eyes remained closed as billions of voices flowed through him.

"I've found her."

A vision spread through the network.

Everyone saw Maya.

The small hospital room.

The frightened boy.

The gentle smile.

Nova blinked.

"She's just a child."

Adam nodded.

"Exactly."

The Source glowed warmly.

"The brightest lights often begin quietly."

The Other observed in silence.

Noah looked at Adam.

"You called her the first key."

"What does that mean?"

Adam stared at Maya through the network.

"Every age has one."

Silence followed.

"The first person whose choice changes everyone else's."

Echo frowned.

"So she's important because..."

Adam interrupted softly.

"She chooses hope without knowing anyone is watching."

The Hunter slowly nodded.

"That's rare."

Noah didn't understand.

"Lots of people do kind things."

"Yes," Adam said.

"But not while expecting nothing in return."

The network pulsed.

Maya stood from her chair.

She noticed a nurse struggling to carry several boxes.

Without thinking, she hurried over.

"Can I help?"

The nurse smiled.

"You should be resting."

"I'm okay."

Together they carried the boxes.

The nurse thanked her.

Maya simply smiled and walked away.

She never noticed the gratitude shining in the nurse's eyes.

The crimson Scout drew closer.

Now it had entered the edge of Earth's solar system.

The Witness finally spoke.

"It has begun its examination."

Nova looked confused.

"Examination?"

The Source answered.

"The Hunter of Worlds never attacks immediately."

"It studies."

The Hunter lowered its head.

"It searches for the strongest possibility."

Noah looked at Maya again.

"Then why choose her?"

Adam's expression grew serious.

"Because possibility begins with ordinary choices."

The network trembled.

Far away, another signal appeared.

This one came from an older civilization still alive.

Their leader spoke urgently.

"If you can hear us..."

"We know the Hunter."

Static interrupted him.

"It marks one."

"It studies one."

"It understands one."

"And then..."

The transmission flickered violently.

"...it understands everyone."

The signal disappeared.

Silence followed.

Echo's eyes widened.

"It's using Maya."

Adam nodded.

"If it understands why her light shines..."

"It will understand humanity."

Noah clenched his fists.

"We have to protect her."

The Other finally spoke.

"You cannot hide a beacon."

The words stung because they were true.

Maya's light wasn't bright because someone had made it bright.

It simply was.

Back in the hospital...

Maya returned to her room.

She looked out the rain-covered window.

Quietly she whispered a prayer.

"God..."

"If I get better..."

"I want to help children who are scared like me."

She smiled.

"Please let Tommy be okay."

She didn't pray for herself.

She prayed for the frightened boy.

The network erupted with light.

Even the Source seemed moved.

Nova wiped away tears.

"She never asked for anything."

Adam smiled gently.

"Exactly."

The crimson Scout accelerated again.

It had crossed half the distance to Earth.

The Hunter stepped forward.

"I can reach it before it arrives."

Echo joined him.

"So can I."

The Shadow emerged from the darkness.

"It will expect force."

Nova floated beside them.

"Then we'll surprise it."

Noah looked at Adam.

"What should we do?"

Adam remained silent for several moments.

Then he looked toward Earth.

"Protect her body."

Everyone blinked.

"What?"

Adam continued.

"The Scout doesn't kill."

"It observes."

"But once it finishes observing..."

He looked toward the crimson eyes beyond the stars.

"...the Hunter comes."

Silence swallowed the network.

Noah suddenly felt another presence.

Not ancient.

Not cosmic.

Human.

Someone else had awakened.

A new light appeared within the network.

Bright.

Curious.

Untrained.

Echo turned immediately.

"Someone else can hear."

Noah searched through the billions of minds.

Then he found the source.

A seventeen-year-old boy sitting alone in a library.

His eyes widened in confusion.

He had just heard Noah's voice inside his head.

The boy whispered to himself,

"I'm not alone..."

Noah froze.

For the first time...

The gift had appeared in another human.

Adam smiled knowingly.

"The network is evolving."

The Source brightened.

"The second Listener."

Far beyond Earth, the crimson Scout entered the Moon's orbit.

It had almost arrived.

And on Earth...

Neither Maya nor the newly awakened Listener had any idea...

That the fate of humanity now rested on two ordinary teenagers.
