Chapter 1 - Prologue: Peace Shattered

The sun rose gently over the cobbled streets of Niko Samuel's hometown, painting the border city in hues of gold and amber. Smoke drifted lazily from chimneys, the smell of fresh bread mingling with the crisp morning air. Children laughed as they chased each other along the market square, while merchants shouted over the clatter of carts, hawking fruits, fabrics, and trinkets from distant lands.

For Niko, this was life—simple, quiet, and ordinary. He walked along the familiar streets, nodding to neighbors, his hand brushing over the sturdy wooden fence of his home. His mother hummed in the kitchen, the scent of porridge drifting through the open window. His younger siblings tumbled over each other in a game of tag, their laughter echoing against the walls of the town.

It was the kind of morning that made a man believe the world was exactly as it should be.

Then, the first whisper came—a murmur at the market, a shadow of unease in the chatter. "The King… he's dead."

Niko froze mid-step. The old man speaking was pale, eyes wide with disbelief. "Dead? But… how?"

No one seemed to know. Rumors spread like wildfire: a sudden illness, poison, a coup. Then, darker news arrived—Prince Korran, the King's only son, had seized the throne in a bloody, silent coup. The city's soldiers were called to allegiance, neighbors whispered of betrayal, and fear began to seep into the cobblestones themselves.

Niko returned home, heart pounding. His mother's smile did nothing to calm the unease gnawing at him. Somewhere beyond the city walls, borders that had always been neutral now trembled with the threat of invasion. And far off, beyond his sight, armies were preparing.

He did not yet know that this morning, this ordinary, golden morning, was the last he would ever know of peace.

The Punisher: Grand Vengeance—revenge has a new name.
