Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Penthouse Threshold

The private elevator to the CEO's penthouse ascended in near silence, only the soft mechanical hum and the rapid beat of Lin Yuè's heart filling the space.

Guàn Jǐngchén stood beside him, one hand resting casually on the railing, the other occasionally brushing the small of Lin Yuè's back as if to steady him. The touch was light, but each time it landed, Lin Yuè felt electricity race up his spine.

"You're quiet tonight," Guàn Jǐngchén observed, voice low and smooth.

Lin Yuè kept his eyes on the glowing floor numbers, cheeks flushed. "I… I've never been to a penthouse before. It feels… too much."

A soft chuckle escaped the CEO. "You'll get used to it. I don't like leaving important assets unprotected."

The doors opened directly into the sprawling living space.

Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the glittering Shanghai skyline at night. Soft ambient lighting cast warm gold across minimalist furniture — sleek black leather couches, a massive glass dining table, and an open kitchen that looked untouched. In the corner, a wall of monitors flickered with live security feeds.

Lin Yuè stepped inside hesitantly, sweater sleeves pulled over his hands, looking every bit the overwhelmed young intern.

"It's… beautiful," he whispered.

Guàn Jǐngchén shrugged off his suit jacket, draping it over a chair. The white shirt clung to his broad shoulders, tie already gone. "Make yourself comfortable. We have work to do."

He led Lin Yuè to a secondary study area — a long desk with dual ultra-wide monitors already set up. Two high-backed chairs waited side by side.

"Sit."

Lin Yuè obeyed, perching on the edge of the chair. Guàn Jǐngchén took the seat right beside him, so close their thighs nearly touched.

For the next two hours they worked — reviewing logs, simulating attack vectors, refining the new encryption layers. Guàn Jǐngchén's arm rested along the back of Lin Yuè's chair, fingers occasionally grazing his shoulder when he pointed something out.

Every touch felt deliberate. Every lingering glance heavier than the last.

At 1:17 AM, Lin Yuè stifled a small yawn, eyes watering.

Guàn Jǐngchén noticed immediately. "Tired?"

"A little…" Lin Yuè admitted softly, rubbing his eyes with the heel of his hand. "But I can keep going."

The CEO's expression softened — just a fraction. He stood, pulling Lin Yuè up with him by the wrist.

"Enough for tonight. You're staying here."

Lin Yuè's eyes widened. "Here? But I—"

"No arguments." Guàn Jǐngchén's tone left no room for debate. "The guest room is prepared. Or…" His gaze darkened as he stepped closer, backing Lin Yuè gently against the desk. "You could stay in mine. For safety."

Lin Yuè's breath caught. The CEO was so close now — cedar and coffee scent wrapping around him, body heat radiating like a furnace.

"I… I don't want to impose," Lin Yuè murmured, voice barely audible, lashes fluttering.

Guàn Jǐngchén's hand came up, cupping Lin Yuè's cheek. His thumb brushed slowly across the boy's lower lip, parting it slightly.

"You're not imposing," he said, voice rough. "You're mine to protect now."

The air between them crackled. Lin Yuè's heart hammered wildly. For a moment, the innocent facade wavered — his eyes darkening with something deeper, hungrier — before he blinked it away and looked up with pure, soft vulnerability.

"CEO Guàn… you're too kind to someone like me."

Guàn Jǐngchén leaned in slowly, giving him every chance to pull away.

Their lips were inches apart when the main monitor on the wall suddenly flashed red.

**INTRUSION ALERT — LEVEL 3 BREACH ATTEMPT**

Guàn Jǐngchén froze, then cursed under his breath. He pulled back, but not before pressing a quick, searing kiss to Lin Yuè's forehead.

"Stay here," he ordered, already moving toward the monitors. "Don't touch anything."

Lin Yuè nodded obediently, fingers curling into his sweater.

But the moment Guàn Jǐngchén's back was turned, a tiny, satisfied smile curved his lips.

The "breach attempt" was his own subtle test — just enough to distract, just enough to buy time.

As the CEO focused on the screens, Lin Yuè's eyes sharpened behind the innocent mask.

*One step closer, Jǐngchén.*

*And soon… you'll never want to let me go.*
