Chapter 2 - Chapter two: Whispers Beneath the Crown

The wedding ended.

But the silence that followed… felt heavier than the noise.

Seraphina walked beside her husband through the dimly lit corridors of the palace, her steps slow, controlled.

She didn't look at him immediately.

Not because she didn't want to.

But because she was… aware.

Of him.

Prince Kael Draven was not simply handsome.

No.

That word was too weak.

He was the kind of man people whispered about in fear and fascination.

Tall. Broad-shouldered. Built like someone who had known war more than peace.

His dark hair fell slightly over his forehead, careless but intentional, and his sharp jawline looked like it had never softened for anything… or anyone.

But it was his eyes—

Cold. Deep. Almost inhuman.

Like something ancient lived behind them.

And yet—

People still looked.

Too long.

Too dangerously.

Seraphina finally turned her head slightly.

Just enough to study him.

He noticed immediately.

"You stare boldly for someone who was warned," he said, his voice low, smooth… dangerous in a quiet way.

She didn't look away.

"I like to understand what I've been given," she replied calmly.

That made his lips shift.

Not quite a smile.

But something close.

Something darker.

"And what do you think you've been given?" he asked.

Seraphina's gaze lingered—just briefly—on his face.

On the sharp lines.

The quiet power.

The danger he didn't bother to hide.

"A man," she said slowly,

"…that people fear more than they respect."

Silence.

Then—

Kael stopped walking.

The air changed instantly.

He turned to face her fully this time.

And now… there was no distance between them.

Up close—

He was worse.

Too striking.

Too intense.

The kind of beauty that didn't comfort… it unsettled.

"Fear," he said softly,

"is far more useful than respect."

His voice dropped slightly as he leaned closer.

Not touching.

Not yet.

"And tell me, Seraphina…"

His eyes darkened.

"…do you fear me?"

Her heart skipped.

Just once.

But her expression didn't change.

"Should I?" she asked.

A pause.

Then—

Kael let out the faintest breath of something that almost sounded like amusement.

"You will," he said quietly.

A scream echoed through the corridor.

Sharp.

Terrified.

Cut short.

Seraphina's head turned instantly.

But Kael—

Didn't even flinch.

"…what was that?" she asked.

"Nothing," he replied.

Too quickly.

Too easily.

A lie.

Footsteps rushed toward them.

A guard dropped to one knee, clearly shaken.

"My prince… it's happened again."

Again.

Seraphina's stomach tightened.

This time—

Kael smiled.

And it ruined his beauty completely.

Because it wasn't human.

"Clean it," he said calmly.

"Before it becomes… noticeable."

The guard nodded quickly and disappeared.

Seraphina's eyes returned to him slowly.

"What exactly is happening in this palace?"

Kael stepped closer.

Closer than before.

And this time—

His hand lifted.

His fingers brushed against her chin, tilting her face upward.

His touch was firm.

Possessive.

Not gentle.

"You ask questions," he murmured,

"like someone who believes she is safe."

His thumb moved slightly.

Hovering near her lips.

Not touching.

But close enough to make her breath pause.

"Are you not?" she asked quietly.

His gaze dropped.

To her mouth.

And for a brief moment—

Something shifted.

Desire?

Curiosity?

Danger?

"All safety in this palace," he whispered,

"…is temporary."

"My prince."

They stepped apart immediately.

Lord Alaric stood at the far end.

Watching.

But not Kael.

Seraphina.

His gaze dragged slowly over her, deliberate, unhidden.

And this time—

She didn't ignore it.

Neither did Kael.

The air tightened.

"My queen," Alaric said, stepping closer, his voice smoother than it should be. "I trust the palace hasn't… unsettled you yet."

Seraphina held his gaze.

Calm.

Measured.

"I don't unsettle easily," she replied.

A flicker of something dark crossed his face.

Interest.

Approval.

Something else.

"I can see that," he said quietly.

Kael's jaw tightened.

"That will be all, Alaric."

The tone wasn't loud.

But it was final.

Alaric bowed.

But as he turned—

He looked back at Seraphina.

And this time—

It lingered.

Too long.

Kael noticed.

And something dangerous settled behind his eyes.

Later that night.

Seraphina stood alone in her chamber.

The silence felt wrong.

Too still.

Then—

She saw it.

A dark stain across the floor.

Blood.

Fresh.

Trailing from the door…

Leading inward.

Her pulse quickened as she followed it slowly.

Step by step.

Until—

She stopped.

Because the trail didn't end.

It disappeared…

Into the shadows.

And from within that darkness—

Something breathed.
