Chapter 1 - The Wedding Night That Changed Everything

The chandelier hung like a frozen galaxy above her, glittering and indifferent to the chaos swirling inside Helena's chest. She adjusted the strap of her black silk gown, the fabric clinging to her in all the right ways, and forced a smile she knew no one would believe. Tonight was supposed to be a celebration—a triumphant display of her survival, her rise back to wealth and influence after the scandal that had nearly destroyed her. Instead, every step toward the altar felt like walking into a carefully laid trap.

The grand hall was alive with laughter, the soft hum of conversation, and the clinking of glasses. Every detail screamed opulence: golden filigree on the walls, crystal chandeliers, velvet drapes that shimmered in the candlelight. Guests whispered, eyes flicking toward her, lips curling in polite curiosity or barely concealed judgment. Helena could feel the weight of their stares like a physical force pressing against her shoulders. She swallowed, trying to steady her trembling hands.

And then she saw him.

He stood at the end of the aisle, statuesque and commanding, every inch the Alpha CEO she had once known—every inch the man whose life she had shattered. The man she had betrayed. The man who had ruined her nights for years with the memory of his cold, unforgiving eyes. And now, impossibly, he was her husband.

A jolt of fear and disbelief struck her chest. The music, the applause, even the whispered conversations—everything seemed to fade. She could hear only the pounding of her heart as she walked down the aisle, her heels clicking against the marble floor with an almost mocking echo. Every step brought her closer to him, and yet, she felt trapped in a nightmare she couldn't wake from.

"Helena," he said, his voice low, smooth, and dangerous, like velvet wrapped around steel. "So good of you to join me."

Her throat tightened, words stuck somewhere between fear, defiance, and something far more dangerous. "I… I—"

"No need to explain," he interrupted, stepping closer, the faintest smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "We both know why you're here."

The hall went silent. Gasps fluttered through the crowd as if everyone had collectively realized the tension in the room was more than polite ceremony. Helena's pulse raced. Her body recognized the pull of his presence before her mind could process it. She wanted to retreat. She wanted to run. But she didn't. She couldn't.

Because, despite herself, a small, infuriating part of her had never stopped wanting him.

The minister's words washed over her, but Helena's attention was trapped by the man standing before her. The way his dark eyes never left her face, the rigid line of his jaw, the subtle tilt of his head that implied both danger and promise. Every fiber of her being screamed that he was a threat, yet her body betrayed her with a heat she had thought long extinguished.

"From now on," he murmured, leaning just slightly closer so that his presence pressed against her awareness, "every step you take, every breath you take… is mine."

Helena's mind screamed in defiance. She would survive this. She would endure his punishments, outmaneuver him at every turn, and when the time came, she would reclaim her power—and exact her revenge. But as the faint brush of his hand against hers, accidental or deliberate, sent a shiver up her spine, she realized the battlefield had changed.

Desire had entered the war, complicating everything. And in the game she had thought she controlled, he now held all the cards.

Her lips curved into a defiant smile, one meant only for him. A challenge. A warning. The crowd may have seen a poised, elegant bride, but he would see the truth: Helena was not a woman to be underestimated, not even by the man she had once betrayed—and certainly not by the man who now held her fate in his hands.
