Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: Pressure Curve

"Status."

[Boundary Stress Increasing]

[Reinforcement Integrity: Degrading – Minor]

His jaw tightened slightly as the second line settled into place, not because of the damage itself, but because of what it implied.

Arty stepped forward, resting his hand against the reinforced entrance as his awareness flowed through the Anchor.

Tiny imperfections revealed themselves, not enough to threaten the structure. He focused carefully, restoring the damaged sections rather than reinforcing them further.

[Reinforcement Applied]

[Structural Integrity: Restored]

The resistance vanished almost immediately. The drain was noticeably lighter than creating the reinforcement in the first place.

"So repairing cost less than rebuilding."

"Inspect the reinforcements."

[Entrance Frame]

Integrity: 100%

Structural Fatigue: Minor

Maintenance Requirement: None

Arty's eyebrows rose slightly as he shifted his attention toward the side fencing.

"Next."

[Side Perimeter]

Integrity: 98%

Structural Fatigue: Negligible

A slow smile spread across his face.

"So I don't have to guess or feel for the weaknesses anymore"

The Anchor wasn't simply giving him power. It was giving him feedback and information. Information was what a Steward could actually use.

Arty repeated the process a second time, deliberately searching for another weakened point along the entrance. The response came faster, because he'd already identified the repair.

The Anchor wasn't simply obeying commands anymore, it was remembering the structure it had already reinforced.

"So every repair teaches the Anchor as well..."

[Confirmed]

He withdrew his hand slowly. This meant maintaining a Settlement wasn't simply preserving it. It would gradually make the Anchor more familiar with everything under its care.

"So... maintenance gets easier the more we do it."

Arty moved away from the entrance and checked the side fencing next, the damage was noticeably lighter.

The Deviant had focused almost entirely on the entrance before shifting toward the softer ground, leaving the remaining sections with only superficial fatigue.

He crouched beside one of the fence posts and repeated the repair, the Anchor responded almost instantly.

[Reinforcement Repaired]

"So the Anchor remembers every structure individually."

That changed more than he expected. The second repair confirmed the first hadn't been luck. The longer a structure remained under his care, the easier it would become to maintain.

The longer they remained under his care, the easier they would become to maintain.

His attention shifted around the perimeter, checking each reinforced point in turn, the entrance had suffered the most from this Deviant, side fencing showed only minor fatigue.

The rear channel remained almost untouched, these patterns matched exactly where the Deviant had chosen to test, there was nothing random about it, simply mapping out his space and gathering information.

"And left me something to learn."

"Can I extend the Anchor?"

[Extension Not Available]

[Requirement: Capacity Expansion Upgrade]

Arty frowned. "Capacity..."

His attention drifted across the warehouse, he had plenty of storage space for now, and the living and work spaces would need attention.

The Anchor wasn't refusing because it lacked power, it was refusing because the Settlement itself hadn't grown enough to support a larger field.

"So expansion isn't an ability..."

[Confirmed]

He looked around the warehouse.

"...it's earned… So I've got to keep working then."

[Confirmed]

His attention drifted through the warehouse again, the Anchor wasn't asking for a larger building, it was asking to become more.

"So expansion starts long before the walls move."

He rested his hand against the reinforced frame once more, repeating the repair with greater control than before.

[Anchor Efficiency Synergy Detected]

Arty frowned. "That was new."

His reinforcements settled faster, using noticeably less effort on his part.

"So efficiency improves with experience..."

[Confirmed]

Arty stood quietly for several moments, the warehouse was evolving right along side him.

Today he'd started understanding, he suspected that would be the difference between surviving... The one advantage he has is the ability to Reset, with this advantage he needs to make it count.

Arty remained still for several moments, quietly reviewing everything the encounter had taught him.

The Settlement hadn't become larger, nor had the Anchor unlocked a new ability, yet the warehouse somehow felt different.

Yesterday he'd been reacting to problems as they appeared… Today he was beginning to anticipate them.

The distinction seemed small at first, but the longer he considered it, the more important it became. Building the Settlement had only been the first step.

Keeping it alive would be the real challenge.

[Adaptive Function Unlock Condition Progress Increased]

Arty looked beyond the warehouse entrance toward the empty car parks and the other industrial buildings, those yellow eyes hadn't yet returned.

Arty smiled.

"Alright... Let's build something worth protecting."

"System… Now that I understand the Anchor... What can I actually build?"

[Steward Projects Available]

• Living Quarters

• Workshop

• Water Collection

• Food Production

• Defensive Structures

Arty stared at the list.

"So that's where this is heading."

The first project remained highlighted.
