Chapter 10 - First Hunt

The Veil's air was thick with tension, shadows twisting unnaturally along the walls. Zara Voss's pulse thundered in her ears as she followed Kai into a wide courtyard that stretched like a dark ocean under a shattered sky.

"This is your first hunt," Kai said, voice low and firm. "What awaits you here is not a test. It is reality. Shadows, creatures… they all obey rules you do not yet fully understand. Survive—and learn. Fail—and you do not leave this place."

Zara's stomach knotted. Her shadows twined around her arms like protective serpents, pulsing with energy. "What is it? What am I hunting?"

Kai's eyes gleamed. "You will know soon enough. Stay alert."

A low growl echoed from the far end of the courtyard. Shapes emerged from the darkness—massive, jagged beasts, shadows solidified into grotesque forms. Their eyes glowed crimson. Teeth snapped in anticipation.

Zara's heart hammered. She raised her hands instinctively, summoning her shadows into whiplike extensions. The creatures lunged.

Time slowed. Instinct and power collided. Shadows surged, wrapping around the beasts, striking, slicing, defending. One slammed into a creature, sending it dissolving into black mist. Another twisted around a clawing monster, yanking it back into the shadows.

But there were too many. One knocked her off balance, claws grazing her side. Pain flared, sharp and hot, but Zara gritted her teeth. Control. Focus.

"Feel them!" Kai shouted. "Do not fight blindly! The Veil reacts to emotion. Channel your will—let the shadows flow!"

Zara closed her eyes for a heartbeat, letting fear drain. Energy surged through her like wildfire. Her shadows responded instantly, moving with fluid grace, striking at every threat with precision she hadn't known she possessed.

The beasts faltered. One by one, they dissolved into mist under her control. The last creature hesitated, eyes flicking toward her. She held her gaze, shadows coiling like living armor. Slowly, it bowed its massive head before disappearing entirely.

Zara gasped for breath, knees weak, heart pounding. She had survived. She had won.

Kai stepped beside her, his golden eyes assessing her. "Yes. You survived. But remember this—every enemy in the Veil is alive, and each has its purpose. Power without understanding is dangerous. You're learning… but the real trials are only beginning."

Zara looked down at her hands, still glowing faintly. "I… I think I'm ready," she whispered, voice trembling with both exhaustion and exhilaration.

Kai's lips curved into a faint, approving smile. "Good. Because the Veil will keep testing you… and the Night Sovereign is watching. Every victory is also a signal to him: the heir is awake."

A cold whisper curled around her mind, softer, closer, more intimate:

"Clever… strong… but still fragile. Heir… we are coming."

Zara swallowed, her fists clenching. Her shadows coiled tightly, alive, responsive. Fear was still there—but determination burned brighter.

She would survive. She would master her power. And she would face whatever the Night Sovereign sent next.
