Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 – Blood in the Streets

Night arrived faster than Alex expected.

The city looked completely different after sunset.

During the day there had been panic, sirens, chaos. But at night something far worse took over.

Silence.

Entire streets were empty except for the slow wandering shapes of the dead.

Alex moved quietly along the edge of a rooftop, observing the street below. His combat knife rested loosely in his right hand while the backpack remained secured across his shoulders.

His mind was calm.

Too calm.

But that was normal.

Alex Mercer had been raised differently from most people.

His family name once carried weight in military circles. For generations the Mercer family had produced commanders, strategists, and soldiers.

War had always been part of their blood.

But that legacy ended years ago.

One by one his relatives had died in various conflicts.

By the time Alex turned sixteen…

He was the last Mercer alive.

That reality had hardened him early.

Emotion was a luxury.

Discipline was survival.

A walker stumbled into the streetlight below.

Alex jumped down from the rooftop.

The creature barely had time to react before the knife entered its skull.

The blue notification vanished quickly.

Alex wiped the blade and continued walking.

Then he heard something unusual.

Gunfire.

Not random civilian gunfire.

Controlled bursts.

Military training.

Alex immediately moved toward the sound.

Three blocks later he reached a small intersection.

A military truck was parked sideways across the road.

Several soldiers were taking cover behind it while firing at approaching walkers.

Alex counted quickly.

Four soldiers.

Standard rifles.

Limited ammo.

And they were surrounded.

If the walkers closed the distance, the soldiers would die within minutes.

Alex stepped forward.

Walker after walker approached the barricade.

The soldiers fired again.

One of them shouted.

"We're running out of ammo!"

Another replied.

"Just keep shooting!"

Alex moved.

Fast.

The first walker reached the truck.

THUNK.

Knife through the skull.

The second walker turned toward Alex.

He sidestepped and broke its neck before finishing it with another stab.

The soldiers froze.

They watched as the teenage boy moved through the walkers like a ghost.

Precise.

Efficient.

Three more walkers fell within seconds.

Finally the street became quiet again.

One of the soldiers lowered his rifle slowly.

"...What the hell?"

Another stared at Alex.

"You just saved our asses."

Alex didn't answer.

He simply cleaned his knife.

Then the largest soldier stepped forward.

"You military, kid?"

Alex looked at him.

"No."

The soldier frowned.

"Then what the hell are you doing fighting like that?"

Alex studied them carefully.

Four soldiers.

Tired.

Low morale.

Low supplies.

But trained.

Which meant they could be useful.

Alex finally spoke.

"You need a leader."

The soldiers looked confused.

Then one of them laughed.

"A leader?"

He pointed at Alex.

"You're a kid."

The others laughed too.

Alex said nothing.

Instead he dropped his backpack.

Then he stepped forward.

The laughing soldier barely had time to react.

Alex moved like lightning.

One strike to the throat.

One kick behind the knee.

The soldier collapsed instantly.

Before the others could react, Alex grabbed the second soldier's rifle and twisted his arm behind his back.

The weapon dropped.

The third soldier tried to raise his rifle.

Alex kicked it out of his hands.

Ten seconds later…

All four soldiers were on the ground.

Stunned.

Breathing heavily.

Alex stood over them calmly.

"You're poorly organized."

None of them laughed now.

The leader of the group slowly sat up.

His eyes were filled with disbelief.

"You… just beat four trained soldiers…"

Alex picked up his backpack.

"I told you."

He looked down at them coldly.

"You need a leader."
