The forest felt too quiet.
Lena stood frozen long after the stranger disappeared, her chest rising and falling unevenly. The air still carried the echo of his presence—dark, suffocating, wrong.
Her legs finally gave way, and she dropped to her knees.
"What… is happening to me?" she whispered.
Her hands trembled as she stared at them, half-expecting to see something different—something unnatural.
But they looked the same.
It was everything inside her that had changed.
A sudden rush of movement tore through the trees.
Lena barely had time to react before a massive dark wolf burst into the clearing.
The Alpha.
He shifted mid-stride, his human form returning in seconds. His sharp eyes scanned the area, every muscle in his body tense with alertness.
"Lena."
Her name came out low. Controlled.
But underneath it—
Fury.
He was at her side instantly, crouching in front of her. "What happened?"
Lena opened her mouth, but no words came at first.
"I… I wasn't alone," she finally managed.
His expression darkened.
"Who was here?"
"I don't know," she said, shaking her head. "I've never seen him before."
The Alpha's jaw clenched. "What did he do?"
"He didn't touch me," Lena said quickly. "But he knew me… or at least, he knew something about me."
"That's not possible," he muttered.
Lena let out a weak, almost humorless laugh. "That's exactly what I thought."
She hesitated, then added quietly, "He said he's been looking for me."
That did it.
Something dangerous flickered in the Alpha's eyes—something far colder than before.
"Did he say what he wanted?"
Lena swallowed. "Power."
Silence fell.
Heavy.
Tense.
The Alpha stood slowly, his gaze sweeping the forest again, as if expecting the stranger to reappear at any moment.
"They're moving faster than I thought," he said under his breath.
Lena frowned. "They?"
He didn't respond immediately.
Instead, he turned back to her, his expression now unreadable—but his decision clear.
"You're coming with me."
Lena blinked. "What?"
"You're not safe out here," he said firmly.
"I can go back to Maya—"
"No."
The word was sharp.
Final.
"You don't understand what you're involved in," he continued. "And until I know exactly how much they know, you stay where I can see you."
Lena pushed herself to her feet, frustration rising again.
"You keep saying things like that, but you won't explain anything!" she snapped. "I deserve to know what's happening to me!"
"And I will tell you," he replied, his voice lowering—but no less firm. "When it's safe."
"That's not good enough."
For a moment, they just stared at each other.
The tension between them thick, charged.
Then—
"It will have to be," he said.
Lena's chest tightened.
There it was again.
That authority.
That control.
And the worst part?
A part of her wanted to listen.
Hated that she wanted to listen.
But before she could argue further, the sound of approaching footsteps broke the moment.
Maya.
She rushed into the clearing, her eyes wide with panic. "Lena! I felt something—what happened?"
Lena turned toward her, relief flooding her system. "I'm okay."
Maya looked between her and the Alpha, clearly sensing the tension.
"What's going on?" she asked.
The Alpha didn't hesitate.
"She's coming with me," he said.
Maya stiffened. "Excuse me?"
"It's not a request."
Maya stepped closer to Lena, her protective instincts kicking in immediately. "With all due respect, Alpha, you don't just take her without an explanation."
Lena blinked in surprise.
Maya rarely challenged authority.
But this?
This was different.
"She's in danger," the Alpha said.
"So explain it," Maya shot back.
Silence.
Then—
"No."
The word landed like a wall.
Maya's jaw tightened.
Lena placed a gentle hand on her arm. "It's okay."
Maya looked at her, searching her face. "Lena…"
"I'll be fine," Lena said softly, though she wasn't entirely sure it was true.
But something inside her—something instinctive—told her this was the right move.
Even if it was terrifying.
Maya hesitated, then nodded reluctantly. "You better come back in one piece."
A small smile touched Lena's lips. "I'll try."
The Alpha turned without another word, already moving.
Lena took one last look at Maya before following.
The deeper they went into the forest, the quieter it became.
No voices.
No laughter.
Just the sound of their footsteps and the steady rhythm of Lena's heartbeat.
After a while, she spoke.
"Where are we going?"
"My territory," he replied.
Lena frowned. "Isn't all of this your territory?"
"Yes," he said. "But there are places even the pack doesn't go."
That didn't make her feel better.
Minutes later, they arrived at a secluded area hidden deep within the forest.
A large structure stood there—part cabin, part fortress. Isolated. Guarded by silence.
"This is where you've been hiding," Lena murmured.
The Alpha glanced at her. "Observing."
He stepped aside, gesturing for her to enter.
Lena hesitated only for a second before stepping inside.
The moment she crossed the threshold—
Something shifted.
The air felt different.
Heavier.
Ancient.
Her wolf stirred again, more alert than ever.
"You feel it," the Alpha said from behind her.
Lena nodded slowly. "What is this place?"
"A sanctuary," he replied. "And a prison, if it needs to be."
She turned to face him, unease settling in her chest.
"For who?"
His gaze locked onto hers.
"For you."
Lena's heart skipped.
"What?"
He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming in the confined space.
"Until I understand what you are," he said quietly, "and what you're capable of… you don't leave."
The words sent a chill through her.
"That sounds a lot like I don't have a choice."
"You don't."
Silence.
Heavy.
Unforgiving.
Lena held his gaze, her fear slowly giving way to something else.
Determination.
"Then you better start explaining," she said firmly. "Because I'm not staying here in the dark."
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then—
"Fine."
He exhaled slowly, as if bracing himself.
"Your parents didn't die the way you were told."
Lena's breath caught.
"They were killed," he continued. "Because of what they protected."
Her voice came out barely above a whisper.
"And what was that?"
His eyes darkened.
"You."
The word hit like thunder.
"And what you carry inside you… isn't just a wolf."
Lena's world tilted.
"Then what is it?"
A pause.
Then finally—
"The last of something that should have gone extinct centuries ago."
