Chapter 1 - The Day I Learned Humans Are Weak

The first time I understood how fragile humans were…

I was smiling.

Rain fell softly over the school courtyard, turning the concrete into a dull mirror. Students ran past, laughing, shouting, complaining about exams.

Normal.

Predictable.

Pathetic.

I stood still under the gray sky, my black uniform soaked, my fingers loosely gripping the strap of my bag.

Across the courtyard—

A boy was begging.

"Please… I didn't mean to bump into you…"

His voice trembled.

Three students stood in front of him. Clean uniforms. Expensive watches. The kind of people who believed they owned the world simply because no one had proven otherwise.

One of them stepped forward and slapped him.

Not hard.

Not enough to injure.

Just enough to establish dominance.

The boy flinched like a broken puppet.

"Then learn where to walk," the bully said casually.

Around them, dozens of students watched.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

No one cared.

I tilted my head slightly.

Interesting.

Not the violence.

Not the fear.

But the silence.

Humans always pretend they value justice…

until it requires risk.

"Hey."

A soft voice pulled me out of my thoughts.

I turned.

She stood there—umbrella in hand, eyes hesitant but kind.

Her name was Yuna.

Average height. Long dark hair. The type of girl people described as "nice" and then forgot five minutes later.

"Why are you just standing in the rain?" she asked, stepping closer and slightly extending the umbrella over me.

I stared at her.

Not her face.

Not her eyes.

Her intention.

Kindness without benefit.

I had always found that… strange.

"Does it bother you?" I asked calmly.

She blinked. "What?"

"The rain."

"Of course it does. You'll get sick."

"I see."

There was a pause.

She glanced toward the courtyard incident, her grip on the umbrella tightening.

"We should… do something," she whispered.

I followed her gaze.

The boy was now on his knees.

Apologizing.

Again.

And again.

And again.

"Why?" I asked.

Her expression hardened slightly. "Because it's wrong."

"Wrong," I repeated.

Such a convenient word.

"Will you help him?" I asked.

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

But that second told me everything.

Fear.

Calculation.

Self-preservation.

"No," I said quietly.

She looked at me, confused. "No?"

"You won't help him."

"I—"

"You're waiting," I continued, my voice steady, almost gentle, "for someone stronger to step in."

Her lips parted.

No words came out.

I stepped forward.

Past her.

Toward the scene.

Her voice came from behind me, slightly panicked—

"Wait! Don't—"

The three bullies noticed me immediately.

One of them smirked. "What do you want?"

I stopped a few steps away.

Close enough.

Not too close.

Perfect distance.

"Continue," I said.

They frowned.

"What?"

I gestured slightly toward the boy on the ground.

"Don't stop because of me."

Silence.

Confusion replaced arrogance for a brief moment.

"Are you stupid?" one of them laughed. "Or do you want to join him?"

"Neither," I replied.

I looked down at the boy.

Tears. Dirt. Shame.

Then back at them.

"I'm observing."

There it was.

The shift.

Not in them.

In the air.

Humans don't fear strength first.

They fear the unknown.

"Observing what?" the leader asked, narrowing his eyes.

I smiled faintly.

"Where your confidence comes from."

A punch came instantly.

Fast.

Predictable.

I didn't dodge.

I let it land.

Pain spread across my cheek.

Warm.

Sharp.

Real.

Gasps echoed around us.

Even Yuna.

I touched the corner of my lip, glancing at the blood on my fingers.

Then I laughed.

Softly.

"Now I understand," I said.

The bully frowned. "Understand what?"

I looked straight into his eyes.

Calm.

Unshaken.

Empty.

"You're not confident because you're strong."

A pause.

The rain grew heavier.

"You're confident…"

My voice dropped slightly.

"…because no one here is willing to stop you."

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

And in that moment—

Something changed.

Not outside.

Inside.

A voice.

Cold.

Mechanical.

Unnatural.

[System Initializing…]

My smile slowly widened.

Interesting.

Very interesting.
