Chapter 1 - Chapter One: The Sound of Absence

The morning light crept into the house, cold and indifferent. Alex woke up to a silence so absolute it felt heavy, pressing against his eardrums. It was an unnatural quiet—the kind that screams. There were no joyful shrieks from the children to break the stillness, no aroma of coffee drifting from the kitchen where Emma usually stood at this hour.

He reached out to the other side of the bed. It was cold, empty, and perfectly made.

"Emma? Honey?" he called out, his voice raspy with sleep.

Nothing. Only the mocking echo of his own heartbeat. He sat up, his eyes darting across the room, searching for a trace, a sign, anything. There was a sickening void in the air.

Panic, sharp and cold, began to coil in his gut. He grabbed a shirt from the chair and moved with frantic speed toward the children's room. He pushed the door open, his breath hitching in his throat. The small beds were impeccably made, yet hollow. The toys were lined up on the shelves, still and silent, like guards watching over a ghost town.

"Lily? Jack? Emma!"

He paced through the house, a man possessed. Everything was exactly where it belonged, yet the people who gave this place meaning had vanished into thin air. He pulled out his phone, his fingers trembling violently as he dialed Emma's number. He listened to the long, hollow ring—once, twice, then straight to voicemail. He hit redial, over and over, his lungs tightening, his eyes widening with the terrifying reality of the silence.

He tore through the house, screaming her name, his voice shattering against the vacant walls. There were no notes, no letters, no clues. Just the crushing weight of an absence that felt, in every sense, intentional.
