After assembly, we all went to our classrooms. I followed the other JSS1 students quietly, still trying to understand how everything worked in the school.
When I entered the class, I looked around for a place to sit. Most seats were already taken.
Then I saw an empty seat beside a girl.
She was light-skinned, just like me. Her uniform was neat, properly ironed, and everything about her looked arranged. Her books were placed in order on her desk, her bag was set properly, nothing was out of place.
I walked up to the seat.
"Can I sit here?" I asked.
She looked up at me and nodded.
"Yes."
I sat down.
As I dropped my bag on the desk, my books were not arranged. Some were inside, some were out, and everything just looked scattered.
She noticed.
Without saying much, she adjusted my books and arranged them properly on the table.
I looked at her.
"Thank you," I said.
She nodded slightly.
"My name is Nancy," she said.
"I'm Light," I replied.
She didn't say much again. She just continued minding her things, keeping everything in order.
I noticed something about her.
She was very neat. Everything she did was arranged. Nothing about her was scattered.
Me, on the other hand, I was not organized at all.
From that day, I could already see the difference between us.
She was calm and arranged.
I was careless and scattered.
But somehow… we ended up sitting together.
