Riley's POV
A full minute passes before Caleb speaks again. When he finally does, his voice carries a weight that makes my chest tighten.
"I brought you here, to this exact spot, because it serves as my reminder." His words come out slowly, deliberately. "Seeing you sitting here right now tells me that everything I did was meaningless. All the pain we both endured, especially you, was completely pointless. You still managed to break through every wall I built. You still made me care about you, despite every effort I made to stop myself."
His eyes find mine in the starlight. "I believe you being here, in this place where I completely fell apart, proves we were always destined to remain together. No matter what we suffered through, no matter how hard we fought against it, we were always going to end up right back here. Whether as friends or something more, I honestly don't know, but we were never going to escape this connection."
