Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 : When Silence Speaks Louder

The silence stayed.

Not just in her room.

But in her chest.

She woke up with it.

That same tight, uncomfortable feeling sitting quietly beneath her ribs, refusing to leave. The kind of feeling that didn't shout, didn't demand attention—but stayed there anyway, making everything feel just slightly off.

Her phone lay beside her, untouched.

For once… she didn't reach for it immediately.

Because she already knew what she would see.

Nothing.

No message. No notification. No "good morning."

And that made sense.

They didn't have that kind of connection.

Right?

She turned to the other side, pulling the blanket over her head as if that could hide the thoughts forming in her mind.

Maybe I shouldn't have said that.

Maybe I made it weird.

Maybe… I cared too much.

The last thought lingered the longest.

Because it was true.

And that truth felt heavier than anything else.

The day passed slower than usual.

She tried to focus on anything else—anything that wasn't him, wasn't last night, wasn't the way one word had changed everything.

"Right."

It echoed in her mind more than it should have.

One word.

And yet it carried distance.

By evening, she had already checked her phone more times than she wanted to admit.

Still nothing.

And that's when it hit her—

What if he doesn't text tonight?

Her chest tightened.

Because suddenly, that didn't feel impossible anymore.

Night came.

And with it… hesitation.

She sat on her bed, phone in her hand, staring at the blank screen longer than usual.

For the first time since it started—

She didn't know if she should text him.

Because texting meant continuing.

And continuing meant risking that feeling again.

That uncomfortable, heavy silence.

That one-sided feeling she couldn't ignore anymore.

Minutes passed.

Then more.

Her thumb hovered over the keyboard…

Then pulled back.

Hovered again…

Pulled back again.

And then—

Her phone buzzed.

Her breath stopped.

"You disappeared."

Her heart skipped.

She stared at the message, her mind going blank for a second.

He texted first.

"Didn't think you'd be the one to do that."

Something about that line…

It wasn't angry.

But it wasn't light either.

It carried weight.

Her fingers moved quickly this time.

"I didn't disappear."

A pause.

Then she added—

"I was just… thinking."

The reply didn't come immediately.

And just like that—

The waiting returned.

When the message finally appeared, it was shorter than she expected.

"About what?"

Simple question.

But not a simple answer.

She stared at the screen, her thoughts racing again.

Should I say it? Should I act normal? Should I pretend nothing happened?

In the end…

She chose the safest option.

"Nothing important."

The typing bubble appeared.

Stopped.

Appeared again.

Then—

"Didn't feel like nothing."

Her chest tightened again.

Because he noticed.

"You've been quiet."

Another message.

"That's not like you."

Her fingers froze.

Not like her.

That meant he had noticed her patterns. Her timing. Her presence.

That meant…

He had been paying attention.

"You weren't exactly normal either," she typed back.

A pause.

Then—

"Fair."

This time, it felt lighter.

Not completely.

But enough.

The tension didn't disappear.

But it softened.

Just a little.

They started talking again. Slowly. Carefully. Like both of them were aware that something had cracked—and neither wanted to break it further.

But something was still missing.

Something subtle.

Something that had been there before.

And then—

Out of nowhere—

"Can I ask you something?"

Her heartbeat picked up slightly.

"You always do."

"This one's different."

She sat up a little straighter.

"…okay."

A pause.

Longer than usual.

Then—

"What do you think I sound like?"

She blinked.

That wasn't what she expected.

Her mind went blank for a second before a small smile formed.

"I don't know… calm, I guess."

"That's it?"

"Maybe a little annoying too."

"Wow."

She laughed softly, the tension in her chest easing just a little.

Then—

Her phone buzzed again.

But this time…

It wasn't a message.

It was a voice note.

Her heart stopped.

Completely.

She stared at it, her fingers suddenly still.

A voice note.

That meant…

This wasn't just words anymore.

This was real.

Her thumb hovered over it.

For a second, she considered not playing it.

Because once she did…

There was no going back.

No more imagining.

No more distance.

She tapped it.

His voice filled the quiet of her room.

Soft. Slightly low. A little tired.

"Is that close enough?"

Her breath caught.

Everything inside her stilled.

Because suddenly—

He wasn't just a name on a screen anymore.

He was real.

Too real.

She replayed it.

Once.

Then again.

And again.

"…you didn't have to do that," she typed.

Her fingers trembled slightly.

"I wanted to."

Her chest tightened in a different way this time.

Not heavy.

Not painful.

Just… overwhelming.

"Your turn."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"No way."

"Why not?"

"Because… it's weird."

"We're already weird."

She paused.

He wasn't wrong.

Her phone felt heavier in her hands again.

A different kind of weight.

This wasn't just messages anymore.

This wasn't just late-night conversations.

This was something crossing into reality.

Something more dangerous.

Her thumb hovered over the microphone icon.

Her heart racing louder than before.

Faster.

Stronger.

Should I?

And for the first time—

She realized something that made her chest tighten again.

Not fear.

Not hesitation.

But something deeper.

If she did this…

If she let him hear her voice…

There would be no going back to just strangers.

Her finger rested on the microphone…

and her heart whispered something she couldn't ignore—

this is where everything changes.
