Chapter 2 - Chapter 4 — When It Breaks

The crack didn't sound real.

It shouldn't exist.

Yet it did.

Thin.

Sharp.

Like glass being scratched from the inside.

Everyone froze.

Even the wind seemed to stop.

"…what is that…?"

Someone whispered.

No one answered.

Because everyone felt it.

That pressure.

Heavy.

Unnatural.

The instructor's voice cut through the silence.

"Back. All of you—now."

No hesitation this time.

No authority needed.

They moved.

Instinct.

Fear.

Survival.

Kaizen didn't move immediately.

His eyes were locked on the distance.

The air there—

Was wrong.

Not distorted.

Not broken.

Just—

Unstable.

Like something was forcing its way in.

"…this is bad."

Zane grabbed his arm.

"Move!"

Kaizen stepped back—

Slowly.

Reluctantly.

Because something inside him—

Was reacting.

Not fear.

Recognition.

The crack widened.

Not loudly.

Not violently.

But undeniably.

A thin line split open—

And darkness seeped through.

Not shadow.

Not absence of light.

Something thicker.

Heavier.

Alive.

Nyra's voice was barely above a whisper.

"…it's opening."

The instructor stepped forward.

His expression hardened.

"Everyone, behind me."

Energy surged around him.

Structured.

Solid.

Stable.

Four clear circuits formed around his body.

Coal Rank.

But refined.

Controlled.

"Stay back."

The darkness pulsed.

Then—

It moved.

Something pushed through.

Slowly.

Dragging itself into the world.

A hand.

Twisted.

Too long.

Too thin.

Like it had too many joints.

It gripped the edge of the crack—

And pulled.

The rest followed.

A creature stepped out.

Its form unstable.

Shifting.

Like it couldn't decide what it was.

Its surface flickered between solid and smoke.

Its eyes—

Didn't exist.

But it was looking.

At them.

The air bent around it.

The ground trembled again.

Someone screamed.

The instructor moved instantly.

"Down!"

He slammed his foot forward.

Energy surged.

A wall formed—

Solid carbon.

Sharp.

Dense.

The creature reacted.

Faster than expected.

It didn't charge.

It didn't roar.

It vanished.

For a split second—

Gone.

Then—

It appeared inside the barrier.

Too fast.

Too wrong.

The instructor's eyes widened.

"…impossible—"

The creature moved.

A blur.

A strike.

The impact echoed.

The barrier cracked.

Not shattered—

But damaged.

Zane stumbled back.

"What is that thing?!"

No answer.

Only movement.

Chaos.

The creature turned.

Not toward the instructor.

Not toward the strongest.

But—

Toward them.

The weakest.

E-rank.

Kaizen felt it.

That gaze.

That pressure.

Locked onto him.

His breath slowed.

Not fear.

Focus.

That same feeling again—

From the circle.

From the training.

From the crack.

Something inside him—

Responded.

The creature moved.

Straight at him.

Fast.

Too fast.

Zane froze.

Eira stepped back.

Nyra's eyes widened—

"…Kaizen!"

Time slowed.

The distance closed.

The strike—

Incoming.

Kaizen raised his hand.

Not in panic.

Not in defense.

But—

Instinct.

That pattern.

That interruption point.

That almost—

Energy gathered.

For the first time—

It didn't collapse immediately.

It held.

Thin.

Unstable.

But—

There.

The creature reached him.

Its form twisting.

Its strike—

Descending.

And in that moment—

Something inside Kaizen shifted.

Not fully.

Not completely.

But enough—

For something to finally begin.
