Chapter 1 - love is one ring

My name is Ayra.

Marriage was never a dream of mine. It was never butterflies or fairy lights or slow dances in the rain. To me, it was responsibility. A contract. A decision made by families, not hearts.

They called it a "contract marriage."

One year. That was the deal.

His name was Rafin. Calm. Patient. Annoyingly gentle.

On the first night, he told me,

"If this marriage feels like just a contract to you, I understand. But I'll try to turn it into something real."

I smiled politely. "Love doesn't grow in a year."

He looked at me in a way that made my chest feel strange.

"Sometimes," he said softly, "a single moment is enough."

The first few months, we lived like strangers sharing space. Separate routines. Separate silences. Separate dreams.

Then one night, it rained heavily. My office work ran late, and the streets were nearly empty. I didn't call him. I didn't want to depend on him.

But when I reached the corner near our apartment, I saw him.

Standing there. Holding an umbrella. Soaked at the edges.

"I knew you'd be late," he said simply.

Something shifted inside me that night.

He wasn't fulfilling a contract.

He was caring.

And then my past came back.

My ex stood in front of me and said,

"This isn't love. You're forcing yourself into something safe."

Safe.

That word echoed in my head.

That night, I stared at the ring on my finger. At first, it felt like a symbol of agreement. Obligation. Time ticking away.

But somewhere along the way, it had become something else.

It had become trust.

As the one-year deadline approached, Rafin sat across from me at dinner.

"The contract ends next week," he said quietly. "If you want to walk away, I won't stop you."

He meant it. That's what hurt the most.

I reached across the table and held his hand.

"Maybe love doesn't happen in a single moment," I whispered. "Maybe it grows quietly… without asking permission."

He looked at me like he was afraid to hope.

I smiled.

"Love isn't a contract. Love is one ring… when it's on the right hand. And I choose you."

For the first time, it wasn't an arrangement.

It was ours.
